I would never buy a TV from Ebay.

..........and if I was selling one I wouldn't be prepared to let a carrier do their best to destroy it on route.

Many reputable companies use eBay these days, so as long as you check the company details you should be fine. That said eBay is not always the cheapest, so Google the model you want to buy first.

Gordon lives in Cornwall and has a branch of Currys just a few miles away. Their prices are usually very competitive and it would be much safer and convenient buying from them.

Like Larry, I would never buy something like this off EBay when competitive mainstream suppliers are readily available.

If Currys can't get them I would be very doubtful about Ebay promises.

Do you really need a 50 inch screen? My wife and I find our 37 inch screen fine in a normal size living room.

Out TV history is 14in, 26in, 32in, 42in, 50in and now 55in.  Each time we have gone larger & never regretted it. We might not need 55in but once you have had one you wouldn't choose to go back.

I am not looking to complicate this but does Gordon have a music centre/ hi fi system etc?
If so then all TV's that I know of have RCA outputs (phono plug) which should connect directly to the hifi which will give full control over the output to the amplifier headphone socket.

I am not sure what that means but my answer was an attempt to solve the long running problem of Gordon wanting a TV that has a controlable headphone socket.

Perhaps I should have posted in the original thread:

You can buy from Currys online store, and there is an online advisor service too. They will deliver too. https://www.currys.co.uk/tv-and-audio/televisions/tvs/46-54

If it is listed on Website, it will be in stock, and so no out of stock problems to worry about. Speaking to an advisor, you will not be buying blind, which you might be doing on eBay, if you don't know the ins and outs of tech babble.

An advantage of buying from an online retailer, with bricks and mortar stores as well, is that you can ask about after sales service, or possibly even instalation service. If they do an instalation service they will usually hook up your basic appliances or connetct to Blue tooth for you.

hi there Gordon

Have you thought of using AO retailers online?  They do a good selection.   We have had a couple of TVs from them - delivered right to the door.  Touch wood they have been great (apart from one - my son's TV = it developed a fault and they replaced it free of charge, no bother within 2 days.   They do have an online questions and answers thing and if you ask about the head phones socket they will advise and come up with some device you can plug into these super tellies that do everything for you apart from make you your tea.

I see they have some 'Black Friday' deals still on there.

Just a thought Gordon.

The main problem as I see it is that he needs the TV to be able to plug in the headphones he has, Yes Tug fanatics Idea would work but, in this case, having read all the previous issues around this small problem just makes things more complicated for regiment and could result in wires all over the place depending on where any HIFi unit is.

Solutions have been given but do not seem to have been acted on or are not practicable for this situation.

We now seem to be looking for a size of TV before the initial problem with the headphones has been sorted!!

Regiment NEEDS to try to visit a shop with the headphones he wants to use, Currys will do that as I am sure most small retailers will as well, unlikely any of the large supermarkets will as they generally do not have staff who understand the Tech.

If I lived close, I would go and get it sorted but unfortunately too far away.

I hope that you are right but I have little faith in Curry's assistants.
If the TV & a Hifi were near each other I still think that a TV - HiFi cable is a viable answer. It also occurs to me that the cable length on most headphones will result in sitting awfully near a 50in+ TV. This is particularly true if the headphone socket is hidden around the back.

As Longbuild suggests the problem here is the lack of even basic on site help so I would agree that a visit to a shop for a demo including the headphones working properly is essential.

When I worked at Curry's in the 80's !! when it was still a nice, localised store we all had our areas, Mine was Computers (BBC's and Commodores and spectrums), however every week we had to pick out of a hat a main product and then after a few days give a talk / demonstration about that product in the staff morning meeting, that may still happen, but I doubt it.

Can't knock that one Jaymac, plethora of inputs covers all sources required and Black Friday deal is good value. As far as e-bay is concerned, providing the sale is via a dealer and not a "second user" (second hand or refurbished) offer, no problem. My now 6year old Samsung 40" smart TV cost about a fiver cheaper than that one and came from Bay Black Friday dealer.
