PC Case fan for cooling motor?
« on: December 26, 2017, 04:47:43 pm »

Hiya guys!

Hope you all had a nice xmas ^^

Anyway onto my question..

I have a couple of spare PC Case cooling fans as they came supplied with my PC case when i bought it but i swapped the fans out for some others, so these are spares that ive never used, they are 12v / 0.30A draw 12cm silent corsair ones, I'm thinking of placing it blowing onto my motor & also the electrics board which sits just above my motor inside my hull, has anyone done such thing? Good/Bad idea? is the 0.30A draw ok? I will be running it off an aux battery that is 12v 22AH. If 0.30 is high then I will pick another up as there are some on ebay rated at 0.16A with slightly lower /RPM.

Thanks in advance!

I have  6 of the 60mm size waiting to go in to my present build. They will be cooling electronics and a couple of the brushless motors that are in enclosed spaces. Yes its feasible and an easy and cheap way of cooling. Remember though, if the hull is sealed rather than having an opening someplace, what you are doing is just moving around the air trapped inside rather than introducing cooling air.

Thanks Brian,

Yeh I was thinking it will just blow warm air around, its for my TID build so i'm going to have a think about someway of extruding the warm air somehow, any ideas :) The problem is trying to make an inlet or outlet for air, but still trying to keep the hull watertight!

Do you need to cool it? Are your motors and PCB's getting hot and failing due to overheating?
The old adage......if it aint broke don't fix it.... :-))

hiya :)

Yeh I've always been a firm believer of what your saying! But I've yet to run (still building!) my motor is a 24v Brushed (its the BF24 from MMM) & my ESC is a high voltage P98 from Action which has a large heat sink attached, I'd rather fit the fans now as to fit them afterwards if I did end up needing them will be awkward due to the wiring/location etc.

Tizdaz
If you get the stage where the heat-sink fins on a P98 need air-cooling then you have a very serious motor-prop-battery issue.
I've run a 3:1 geared Darke Horse 785 on twenty cells though a P98 and it was drawing maybe 17A. P98 was stone-cold. Like the Man from Retford says, if it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Thanks guys :)

As far as the motor is concerned a fan blowing air on it will not cool it properly m8...you really need to wrap copper brake pipe around it and fit a water pick up pipe behind the prop blade tip use washer pipe and then fit an outlet in the side of the hull to let the water out...That is how to cool a motor

Hi Dave,
Yeh i was thinking about the water cooling thing but didn't want to cut more holes in the hull as id prob have messed it up! so decided to pass on it, so next best option for me was using a fan, as you say though no where near as effective as water cooling but i'm guessing it will help a little. But for now going to test it without when i come to do the water test & see how it goes

If your building  a tid tug, mount the fan under under the funnel so its blowing out the funnel and then open the hatches on the rear superstructure. This circulates air within the hull. As Dave says it will NOT keep the motor cold but will dissipate heat within the hull.

Hi, I go along with Stavros. Some time ago I water-cooled an Electronize ESC with an extra plate screwed on underneath and two tubes soldered on and the top end with a plastic tube connection.  Just the water scoop behind the prop was enough to keep it stone cold while delivering 15 amps to 2 off 540s.  The 12 volt batteries were too hot to pick up.

Tizdaz, let's keep this in the realms of reality. In a Tid tug your motor is only going to use a very small current, probably less than 5 amps, 2 is more likely. Unless you have coupled an inappropriate motor to a large prop you will be fine, no cooling necessary.

Thanks for info guys, yup going to try it without any cooling & see how it is then take it from there :)
