Guidance please (preping a hull for painting)

 My GRP hull has some very fine riveting and plating detail in the gel coat, What is the best means of preparing and keying the hull for priming ?
  I don't want to go at it with wet and dry for fear of losing the detail. I have some B&Q abrasive pads ( 4mm foam with very fine adhesive ) which are all but worn out, I wonder if these would do the job .

Scotch Brite pad is what I would use .

GREY Scotchbrite.do not use the ones you got...search Ebay for some...use either water or even panel wipe to rub down

If your hull is finely detailed, a good wash and  a coat of primer could be all that's need?
