Commandant l'Herminier-French light corvette class-1/100
« on: January 01, 2018, 11:13:14 pm »

Happy new year and Bonne année.

I 've choosen to build the "commandant l'Herminier" because one of my friend had be above his conscription at the end of the eightees on this boat . And few days ago, he gave me a challenge to complete it in a year.
Having make the small frigate "Prairial" at the scale 1/100 in 2003, I've never build another warship till "Commandant l'herminier".
The D'Estienne d'Orves-class, also known as the A69 type avisos, mainly designed for coastal anti-submarine defence, but are also available for high sea escort missions ( in support missions with the submarine boomer).
I can give you some indications :displacement 1250 t, lenght 260 ft, beam 34 ft and draught 17 ft.
photos of the beginning are coming

Hello,

I'm cutting out the frames.  As you can see I'm trying to empty them as much as I can. In fact the width is just 8 cm, so there is not much space to install motors, rudders, ect...

Bonne annee Midori!

I was looking at French WW2 warships in a Janes book last night and wondered about building one! So seeing this interesting project start is interesting.

I wish you well with your build and look forward to months of progress and pictures. You have a challenge fitting electrical 'gubbins' in that small a space, but there lots of miniaturised electrical components and power packs as well as powerful but small brushless motors, so I am sure it will all work out well. If you can do without power distribution systems you will save space. M-troniks ESCs and Mixers are quite small.

Hello,
I get the old plan (1982) from M.R.B magazine.
After the frames cutting, it was time to prepare my work-plan
I have of to adapt my work plan in various deck of the model. There are three decks and the front one is an oblique .
I stuck  poplar slats of various thicknesses to follow at best the frames.

Hello everybody,
As you can see, there are staples on slats. I remove them when glue is dry .
I Wonder which kind of motorization I'll use on the model ?
Too often in France, we see trawlers or warships sailing as running boat. I think the best solution is a reducted motor but which one ?

Maybe a 385 on a single shaft???? or a pair depends on weight

Hello,
Thank you for your advices, but which type of small brushless do I need and which kind of speed controler ?
The hull is totally covered with wooden slats. It is now necessary to sand her with some sandpaper of various grains. Some small retouchs of putty will allow a plane surface.

Good evening,
Thank you for your advices. I've ordered 2 small motors. I'll develop it on a next post.
So , now I'm working on the submarine detection sonar. At first, I've cut it in a wooden block. In a second time i've made a plaster mold.
At the end, I've used lead to represent it. It will low the center of gravity.

I hope the hot lead didn't scald you at all  {:-{ Those dimples suggest there was a little moisture in the plaster. Its a nice shape.

Hello,
At first, you are right , I think the plaster mold was not dry enough.

The hull is going to be covered of one glass fabrics of 20 g / cm2. I am going to spread some epoxy resin with a brush. At the end of 4 hours, the set is dry. But on the other hand the brush will not no to be reused, too difficult to wash

That looks neatly done Midori  :-)) I read recently that you have to be careful when sanding the finer grades of Glass cloths as you can sand right through them  {:-{

Brushes can be cleaned in acetone or cellulose thinners unless the brush was cheapy in which case it would not be worth it for the mess caused!

Hello,
Resin and fibberglass are dry. It's time to cut them in order to be at the same level to decks. As you can see on last photo,I had to correct the shape of the front hull.So I add  putty to reduce curvature radius.

Hello,
The model is running. The chairs of propeller shafts are put. I am going to position them on the propeller shaft, then to weld them. At the same time, I take advantage of it to realize the rudder.

Does your rudder represent the one where a section pivots to increase the effect of the rudder? I cannot think what its name is. I know fishing boats often have Y-Tails made by welding angle iron to the after edge of the rudder, but this is more technologimacal.

She's looking splendid Midori  :-))

I think you perhaps have Schilling and Becker type rudders in mind?  This looks allot more like a Mariner type rudder of sorts set-up to me.

...'tis looking good!

Cheers,

Rich

Hello,
I've started to make the front and the wheelhouse bridge. For once, I could find many photos on internet which help me to detail any bridges. As usual I use plasticard sheets with different thickness.
