Funnel blocked and first filler has been ruffed sanded, over the next few days I'll smooth this out, fill in defects and use high build primer to get it ready to be painted.

Then hopefully it then will be good enough to detail.

The side pieces with the ribs already add hugely to the structure  :-))

The side pieces are air intakes for the boiler room.

How stylish. We made do with grilles and water tight hatches!

Quick update,

I've started to make the gun turret master. The photos should the turret, which still has to have more detail added. However the base is stil too be made.
This means the turret will have to be cast in two parts.

They didn't skimp on their styling with this class did they! I like that turret.
I wonder whether slush casting would give you the results you are after. You need quite quick curing resin and a rubber mould secured in a plaster of resin jacket though.

No,they did not.

When casting I use a Fast Cast resin which flow well in to all areas of the mould. The moulding rubber if its paint over all the find detailing before pouring, gives a clean an sharp mould.

I have not heard of slush casting, can you enlighten me ?

Its probably a bit late now but I think I have copies of the original plans for this class. An extremely rare book which has virtually all the plans of the IJN starting with Mikasa. The quality varies but most are copies of the original plans so not model plans.

I'm not sure if you are aware but the wavy deck line in the IJN came from one of their top designers in the 1930's and is unique to the IJN. Basically high at the bow for see-keeping then lower for the turrets then higher again amidships for buoyancy and lower aft where not needed. The lower level for the turrets was a weight consideration.

This is most prevalent in their heavy cruisers and Yamato class battleships.

Keep up the good work

Cheers

Thanks Geoff for the info.

My model is based on Kagero Super 3D Drawing book which comes with a 1:200 scale drawing, which I've up scaled to 1:100.

I've also got another publication by the same author which gives more detail of the super structure and fitting.

I've made the hull and it's ready for its first sea trials. Once it pass this, I'll be adding more details which I'll post pic later.

Made the mould this afternoon and cast off the first turret. However as it's been hot this afternoon, the fast cast resin, curing time is way to quick and has not allowed any bubbles to float out.

So this first one has to many blow holes and so will be going to the bin.

I will retry later tonight or early in the morning when its cooler.

Hi T888, This is a link to the process of slush casting. If doing only a few castings then it may not be practical especially in warm weather unless you use less of the hardener part. Here: https://www.polytek.com/tutorial/slush-casting-resin-make-hollow-parts

The turret looks good, very good  :-))

Good Work Dave, your turret master looks very crisp.
I have always had admiration for the IJN ship Designers, they had a certain knack for creating nice looking vessels.......mostly.

Thanks Nige,

I,ve always liked style and lines of these ships, it's only until resent I've had the time and skills to take on a Japanese subject.

Ian, re slush casting.
Im going to have a look into the Slush method /product for the turrets later. However at this time I've drilled the bulk of the turret casting to reduce weight.

I fully respect that decision Dave. Sometimes experimenting can overtake a project in time and expenditure, and sometimes enthusiasm.

Thanks Ian for your feedback.

I'm slowly getting pleased with this project , as it's turning out better than I first thought it would.

I like the slush method, as it could open up other options for casting masters that don't lend its self to normal cold casting.

Funnels might be a good case in point as you could master them solid and then cast them hollow assuming you need more than a couple!

Of course, looking at the torpedo luncher, those Long lance Torpedoes were big biffers.

I like the director.

Thanks Ian,

Yes the long lance torpedo was, and very effective to.

Today I,ve been making the degaussing cable that goes around the hull. The degaussing cable is made up of four cables, clip to the hull, just below the deck level.

For the last few months I've been trying to think of away to make this. One idea was to use fine thread . A member in the boat club has made a couple of Japanese battle ship and the method he used was fine thread.

This idea would I felt would not work for my model at 1/100. So I decide to have a go at using fine copper cores. Which I striped from some 10 core cable, and used the cores, the photos shows this method.
