G'day all I have been a member for a while but haven't posted any thing, i have been involved in  live steam for a number of years & are currently 6 years in to my current build a Victorian R class 5" gauge live steam loco but am having a brake at the moment ,I was involved in model boats about 35 years ago & after
a holiday to Echuca in Victoria the home of river paddle steamers i decided to build one i have been slowly building a 1/20 scale of the Murray River paddle steamer Adelaide & finally decided to post a few pic of my build,
Not sure weather this is the wright place to post a paddle steamer build but if not please move it to the correct heading

Interesting steamer Hammer, more pic of the Adelaide's build
1-2- starting to fit the deck beams after coating the inside of the hull with Z epoxy
3- Rudder made out of Murray river red gum
4- Deck timbers fitted made out of Tasmanian Oak
5-Rear view showing rudder servo mounting setup ,the rudder is normally controlled by chains but not practical
in the model I will put chains on only for show

Paddlers aren't that popular on this site. Anyone making a plank on frame hull could learn a lot looking at your work. Just about to start on the boiler for Totnes Castle.

You have such beautiful timbers to work with Gary. A fellow member from your neck of the woods, Brian B, builds amazing boats from local timbers and likewise they are beautiful. Your rudder alone is gorgeous and the construction is first rate.

It is a shame to paint over the natural colours isn't it!

Yes  there are some nice timbers but getting harder to get also expensive,
1-2 bearing blocks made out of 6061 ally machines excellent the bearings are not sealed but intend to fit O rings on final assembly
3- paddle box sides are laser cut out  of Birch ply I drew up the CAD file & sent them away to a chap that makes HO scale model buildings they turned out excellent
4 - 5 PB glued together I made them a firm fit to make them removable but I think I will fit small magnets in the corners to make sure they don't come off in use
6 - support timbers on inside of PB the doors are dummy made out of some left over Teak from anther project as they will be hard to see once installed

I love the paddle boxes! Both sides are really attractive  :-))

Regarding timbers, my neighbour at work bought all the yew then availale in Somerset for a Bed he was building for a customer. Admittedly not everyone wnts Yew but it goes to show that some timbers are scarce.

Well English Yew is as rare as hens teeth, takes hundred of years before they mature to seed.

Are you building so quick or are we catching up with older photos. I hope we are. Yes old furniture is the best way to get timber of any kind. That’s if it’s not chipboard.lol

A few more pic of the build super structure roof fitted , some may notice that there is more freeboard than should be this was done to allow for the weight of the steam engine & boiler

Back into the Adelaide's build starting on the wheel house
Pic. 1- wheel house pic. I took the pic at Echuca when on holidays it has not long had a face lift
2- start of the basic structure 1.5mm ply super glued together
3- just to see how it looks on the super structure
4- the roof support post's required the sides to be bevelled so I had to knock up a simple router table
using a Proxxon tool & a small router bit
5-  in use bevelling the posts
      6- finished post's

Hi Danielle I purpose built it just to bevel the edges of the posts & wall cladding it is made up of what ever I could find in the junk box the tilt bracket is from an old TV antenna, the clamp for the Proxxon I machined out of some left over aluminium it did  take a few hours  to make but makes for a uniform job
Here is a pic of a further modification to the table it is a belt tensioner out of an old ink jet printer the idea is to keep a constant pressure on the timber to get a uniform bevel width works well will post some pic of the end result when I can find them
