Hi there Chicoutimi

Sorry I havent been back in touch with you via PM - trying to sort one or two things out - but, anyway, if you giveme a little time I have several sets of drawings and a large selection of photographs taken aboard the fullsize HMS Leeds Castle before she was decomissioned last year (2005).   This is where my head really swells - I was a guest aboard her for 3 days and had one hell of a time - the crew made me feel really welcome.  I was able to see a lot of parts of the ship that arent normally open to the public - for obvious reasons I wasnt able to photograph all I saw - but I made a few sketches and bits and pieces from memory.  Be in touch very shortly as soon as I sort somethings out for ya.

Have they decommissioned Leeds Castle already?

They've hardly had time to get her bum wet!!!

What happened to keeping ships for a while and getting their money's worth from them?
We're still flying aircraft that are 40 years old in the RAF.

Hi there CK after speaking to the Commander Officer when they were berthed in the Tyne, Lt Commander Chris Goodsell - informed me the powers to be only had a set amount of money to spend on the two ships (Dunbarton Castle and the Leeds Castle) = anyway the Leeds Castle's engines and various other items were in such disrepair, it was decided to spend the money on HMS Dunbarton Castle - to bring her up to speck.

The Leeds Castle (in the words of one of the crewmember) was bought a large bag of elastoplast, a few yards of string and some chewing gum to hold her together .... sad but true.

Here are a couple of pictures I took .

Nice photos, Bluebird.

Typical of the MOD's attitude at the minute.

"We can't afford to buy you the bits to fix the stuff you have properly, so we'll give you some old parts that we took from the one's we scrapped and lets just hope they fit/work/look right (delete as applicable!)."

"Never mind, you'll get lovely new kit any day now.........................."

On that thought, just duck if you ever see a Tornado flying overhead!!!

Hello Bluebird

Great photos of this ship.

Do you have any more photos to share so details can be noted and made for my model.

Hello Nige

I am working to 1:48

I found and bought some photos which are helpful but the on-board sought as Bluebird posted are invaluable for getting details correct as possible. I am working on a 1:96 HMS Intrepid also.... both used in the Falkland Islands conflict. I yet don't but Argentinean anything.  I am working on several other boats to, so it will be sometime before the Leeds is fully operational albeit I may sit what is done on the pond to see how she looks.....too large to put in the bath!

Perhaps we can share info and pictures. I was wondering whether too take a crash course in 3d work so items could be made at say, Shapeways.com

I am also trying to understand if a counter balance system could/ should be fitted inside to reduce liste on the turns.  I read somewhere that someone had used external fins port and starboard placed near to the stern. Can't find the info now. Have to search online all over again.

I shall endeavour to ask if Greenwich Maritime has anything but it may be that the Amiralty has kept the plans etc.
