Quite a few suppliers sell 'rigging lines', Sailsetc. being just one.

I always use Dacron polyester.  That's what's been on my real boat since the lates 70's, that's what goes on my sailing models.
I buy thread from someplace like Sailrite, which comes in colors.  I like "oyster" (lite gray) for running rigging, and charcoal for standing rigging, even for servicing (wrapping).  I use a rope-walk to make larger rope from the threads.
I also use "hard nylon" 3-stranded stuff in appropriate diameters that I get via Amazon.  "Hard nylon" is a tighter-twisted cord than that soft-stuff that unravels into fluff in your hand.  I used to buy it as "mason's string" but now they call the other stuff that too.I know some people that love that braided cord meant for window blinds, which can be had on Amazon as well.

I agree Dacron, I use braided cord as it does not tangle.  Fishing tackle shops are good for the stuff.  If you have boat chandlers nearby then Whipping cord is very good.
You want a cord that does not stretch and make sure it is OK with the bowsies for rigging use.

Hi Martin about 0.3 - 0.5mm dia. 30 - 50 lbs breaking strain.  Make sure it goes into the holes in the bowsies.
Braiding looks a little different perhaps more suited to sheets for the sails.

Not that I use much on the jolly old steam boats, but on my little sailing boat I have used Dacron, I have tried various materials but found some to slip through the bowsies  ;)

Hi Phil, if you use a 3 hole bowsie it does help with the slipping and shiny string slips.  Whipping cord stays where it is and comes in several different colours.

Do make sure what you get is NOT WAXED if you intend to glue it to anything.
