Water cooling advice please
« on: February 12, 2018, 11:05:28 pm »

Hi all,
I'm installing water cooling to ESC and motor and was wandering if i should use some sort of sealant/adhesive or ?? when connecting the sillicone tube to the fittings?

Thanks Dale.

Hi dale, i would not use silicone tube as it is soft and could slip off the nipples, also it can split. I use oxygen tube from ambulances!!!  go to your local station and ask for the used tubing, they will think your odd but what the hell. They throw away dozens of them, so just ask

I use small zip ties for extra insurance on the water lines of my race boats, there can be quite a bit of water pressure going fast.

Hi Brian, the trouble with zip ties is that they cut into the silicone tubing, sods law in an area you cant see till it floods

Silicone tubing is perfectly OK to use for water cooling, it should not slip off of the fittings unless you are using too large a diameter tubing. As for pressure pushing them off I have used silicone tubing attached to a water pump for the supply to fire monitors on a scale boat without problems.  If you want to add extra security don't use zip ties, if you look closely at them they are not circular when fitted and do tend to leak unless you have them extremely tight when they tend to cut the tube. Use soft copper wire wrapped round the tube a couple of times before twisting the ends together.

Before fitting the silicon tube,
slip a 1/4" offcut of the same size
tube over the end.
Fit the tube on the nipple and then slide the offcut
over the end on the nipple/tube.
It really grips without risk of cutting in.

Yes you have to be careful not to tighten zip ties too much but I use them on all my race boats (12) I change all my lines every season and always pressure test the water fittings. On connections that get removed frequently like carb connections I use the doubled up tubing method described by Nedleyned. I have tried these other clamps as well and have used them in some instances. But recently I've found this waterline from Swoop that is 8mm outside dia. and really heavy duty but still fits standard nipples.

Thanks for all the replies chaps it's very much appreciated.
I have plumbed it up this evening using  the method that Netleyned described and all seems good,
thanks for that Ned.
Thanks again all Dale.
