Cleaning 3D parts safely?

(1/2) > >>

tonyH:
I'm sure that Klunk mentioned a name and I thought that there was something mentioned on the Shapeways site and I've also just seen an item on a sonic bath but my concentration is sieve-like at the moment so can someone please tell me what's the best way to clean very fine 1/144 parts I've received from Shapeways prior to priming and should I use plastic primer?

Cheers

Tony

Klunk:
will check tonite when at work. after printing the parts are put in a strong solution similar to fairy liquid which dissolves the support structures. they are then  rinsed in water. we them painted tgem with another solution to harden the plastic. really the parts should not need cleaning. to vet rid of the ridges on the model we then sand the model lightly. for smaller parts we use a high build primer and then sand back, but beware you could loose detail if you this on intricate parts with fine detail

Klunk:
paint with chlorine!  this hardens the surface and helps clean it

Martin (Admin):

Try a search on YouTube for 'smoothing 3d parts'    :-)

Cheers both, I've finally found an answer on the Shapeways Forum and it's summat called Simple Green. Chlorine reminds me of old school chemistry lessons and although acetone is what's used for deep cleaning and smoothing the surface they're both potentially too destructive for the bits I've received.
I only want to degrease prior to priming.
