Powder room lighting
« on: March 18, 2018, 12:00:15 am »

I am reading about BATAVIA while looking at the boat plans, the thought struck me how did they see in the powder room not much light down there, you have people hurrying in and out wanting powder for the guns and wanting it immediately.
So how did they get light you could not have candles in the room and I guess powder would spread  in the air as it was transported to the guns so I would not want a candle outside the door? I cant see any light tubes to deck
Could anyone enlighten me thanks %%

You are quite correct, no naked lights allowed in the magazine.  Illumination came from a lantern positioned in a separate compartment with a glass window to allow the light in. A perfectly straightforward solution.  :-)

Also the magazine was lined with copper sheeting which gives a reflective surface.

Thanks i knew there was a simple solution.I know its amazing how well you can see with dim light.
In the simple plan I have it shows no detail. But you have a small ammunition room next to the powder room.
My guess is that the window would be between them allowing light for both rooms.
anyone point me to a site with more details .
Tried google but seem to always end up in women,s powder rooms

Powder - in barrels - would be dispensed into canvas charge bags in the powder room. There should be a separate and specific light room to illuminate this. Workers in the powder room were forbidden to carry any metal objects on their person, and had to wear felt shoes. I can post images tomorrow of HMS Bellona's arrangements, if required?

Try searching on magazine rather than powder room.

Colin

I was thinking this thread was about LED strips above bathroom mirrors.  ;D

Probably best to not search for "magazine powder room".  Just saying.

A couple of photos from the forward magazine on HMS Trincomalee. The first is from the outside showing the access to the light box. The second is inside the magazine showing the light box with the lantern behind glass and the copper lining to the magazine. Copper was used to waterproof the magazine and keep out rats who might gnaw through powder cartridges. Only copper was allowed in the magazine, powder barrels used copper rings not iron. In action entrance to the powder room was covered by a wet felt curtain to keep stray sparks out.

From the NRG Model Ship World forum, a build by 'Alexandru' of HMS Victory has copious images of his reconstruction of the magazine here. (I think you need to be logged in to see images).

His image shows the copper-lined magazine adjacent to a handling room, next to the light room. Dim, but I suppose you'd get used to it!

The handling room floor and trough (Filling trough or water receptacle???) look lead lined as well. Mary Rose' galley was lead lined for fire retardation.

And the wooden floor of the magazine has removable floorboards to sweep powder/dust into (presumably damp) lower regions.  :-))

Like "plastic" I thought this thread would be about lights in the lady's loo.  Dirty old man (me).   ;)
