Probably one of the rivets for counting!

If a vessel is under trials for, say, an RN establishment BUT it hasn't been accepted, would it carry any RN/MN flag to indicate such?

There is a reason for the question!

The QE carrier sailed under the Blue Ensign with some sort of device on it before she was commissioned.

I’m sure Warship’s now are automatically classed as rfa ships once they start trials
Years ago it was the red ensign but then they changed it.

Could well be.
My one and only new build was Eskimo and JS Whites trials had a red ensign back in 1962.

It is a bit difficult to make out in my photos but yes, almost certainly the RFA flag I think.

I remember the type 23’s in the late 90’s flying a red duster
So the change was relatively recent

Blue ensign defaced with a Gold
horizontal anchor.

Sorry chaps, I've just got back, read your answers and noticed I'd forgotten to add the date that the matter refers to.

The boat was an experimental Thornycroft TB from 1883!

It was taken from a large batch and modified and since the changes were substantial I have assumed that it wouldn't have been accepted BUT the work was carried out under the control of the Admiralty and the RSNA which in itself would wear the White Ensign but I really have no idea.

If you Google HMS Mimi you will find several sites have a picture of the two 40 ft Thornycroft armed launches HMS Mimi and Toutou on trials on the Thames before acceptance and the nearer boat has the Thornycroft house flag on the ensign staff at the stern. I can't say what colour it was though.

Hi again,

I get the feeling that the answer may, in fact, be a combination. There is a contemporary film on YouTube of the launching of HMS Albion in 1898. She is wearing an ensign, either blue or red, as well as the union flag and a third, unknown, flag.
Could the ensign be worn until handover?
For example, the general Admiralty flag of the period appears to be a blue ensign with a horizontal anchor (not the vertical RFA one)?
The Thornycroft flag on Mimi could be either red or blue because they used either as the ground under the words Thornycroft, Woolston

I remember the the last type 23's coming into Devonport when under builders acceptance trial, they flew the Red Ensign and had a port of registry painted on their stern. Also one of the small river patrol boats came into Portsmouth about 2005 with a port of registry still painted on her stern and she had just been accepted. But the old rule as I knew it was the white ensign was not raised on the sten as an ensign until she was accepted and officially commissioned, until then she belonged to the builders legally.

The Ensign flying aboard the aircraft carrier futur HMS Queen Elizabeth prior her acceptance was this one. I took this picture at Portsmouth on October 28th 2017

In summer 1994 I've seen the futur HMS Northumberland with Red Ensign flying on stern.

It's quite possible that the Government Service Ensign was the one to use but I felt that since the RCNC was founded in 1883 and the trials took place in 1884 it was possible, in the lack of definite evidence and the variations that seem to arise that the special is warranted. The crest is legitimate and the blue would be a serious option so........

PS The flag looks sharper in real life than the pic.
Hopefully, she'll be at Wickie if I can get the multi temperature soldering to stay together!

Have a feeling that the Government service flag, (usually flown by vessels chartered by the Mod) used to be the old Port Auxiliary ensign, prior to the service being absorbed by the R.M.A.S..

Found this old pic of mine, the flag changed as she was commissioned by then just, but she still had a port of registration painted on her for a while.
