Today 50 years ago the interisland ferry Wahine owned by the Union Steam Ship Company got caught in a Massive storm when entering Wellington Harbour hit by a huge rogue wave the Captain tried to turn her around and head back out to sea when she ran over Barrett's reef  and went over on her Starboard side with 53 People lost  49 died on the day others later, I am standing at the beach at Eastbourne were most of the dead ending up and then off to Wellington Harbour to remember the lost and a great ship R.I.P. Today is a big part of New Zealand,s Maritime history .tassie48

remember that tragedy as a spotty 16 year old.........RIP to all those lost, and god bless them all.

The weather in Wellington yesterday lived up to the occasion – storm winds, heavy rain and very, very cold.
Well done Gregg for braving it in that weather.
