Episode 1 all went fine until they had a mega pipe leak in the condensate pipework which was routed over the high voltage dis panel  %% and flooded out the electrickery . Lucky they did not frizzle anyone  They have just found a nasty noise in the rear propshaft bearing which means it is back to Pompey for episode 2 .

The thing that amazed me was that the prop blades were not fitted to the hubs until the ship was almost finished and ready to sail. A heavy difficult job for the divers.

If I remember correctly this was done so they could run the engines and turn the shafts in the dock with out fear of it moving forward....

She was fitted with very minimal pitch propellors originally to allow for basin trials, then they were changed for the 'final' props once complete. If I remember correctly, there were rails fitted which took the weight of the propellor blade and guided it from the position it was slung into the water, to the hub.

The dive team that did that have done some work with us in the past, that kind of work is our bread and butter.

Very impressive job. Anyone know if they have fixed the leaking seal yet? That was due to be done while the ship is afloat too.

The lean manning concept is interesting to, proportionately she needs far less crew than the US carriers but they will be more versatile and highly trained.

Having been aboard the Invincible class at Navy Days (remember them?), I was struck by just how much bigger QE is. She was an amazing sight coming into Portsmouth for the first time last year. Hopefully I will get the chance to se the PoW when she makes her entry as well.

Interesting programme, with more episodes to come.

Incidentally, we were in Pompey on Thursday and were surprised to see both islands encased in scaffolding and the flight deck covered in big frame tents.  Just wondered what they are doing to her now.

When the Prince of Wales arrives the two ships together will look doubly awesome.

I believe they are adding bits and pieces for the next stage of the trials programme. The scaffolding is required due to H&S requirements (!).

Well episode 2.
Turns out the rumble in the stern was a misplaced seal in prop /hub that allowed prop blade to rotate and was potential to tear prop, shaft and mounting blocks out of the hull That could have been nasty.     Programme has some interesting moments when they can get off the refuse disposal problems.

Good to see that 'Thimblehunt' remains. Most other organisations would have given it a politically correct non sexist name by now! I Did my last one 40 years ago.

And we thought we had problems coupling shafts on model boats  >:-o

My first thought on that vibration issue was a misaligned plastic UJ coupling.  Wrong of course

Is it just me or is the EWO’s office a total mess? I can’t see that amount of ebay tat being allowed 20-30 years ago?

Spent a couple of days in Portsmouth with the family, during which we visited the Historic Dockyard and took a boat tour of the harbor where Queen Elizabeth was berthed. She is having a lot of work carried out and during the visit the divers were working on her, don't now what they were inspecting/fixing. Took a few pictures. Jon

Probably poker gauge readings on the A brackets to check for wear on the bearings.

The faulty shaft seal was supposed to be fixed in situ while the ship is afloat so maybe someting to do with that.

Divers inspecting the undersides of a Warship when berthed is absolutely standard Training & Practice let alone any maintenance activity

It is clear that [again] the two large white A profile Marquee tents on the foredeck could hold and host many a Deckchair Admiral's Drinks & Buffett's  8) evenings

Too early to see during this docking, however the Fwd/Port Phalanx CIWS is still conspicuous by its absence

Yes, I believe they are trying to get the new heatproof deck covering to stick to the flight deck, don't you love modern technology!

Bane of my life! But yes, probably this, checking the alignment of the blades, prop cleaning, aft end survey, fitting blanks.... there’s a lot it could be and totally normal.

Very good shots of QE arriving in New York here:

It seems that Jerry Kyd's stint as captain is now over, somebody else taking over for the second part of the F35 trials.

Does anyone know when the ship will be returning to Portsmouth? I don't suppose the actual date will be announced until shortly beforehand but a lot of people will be wanting to welcome her home from her first deployment.
