STEAM YACHT APHRODITE
« on: April 25, 2018, 08:04:17 pm »

Hello,

It's already been a year since I have started that new project. After the SY Medea, I have tried to reproduce another existing steam yacht but I'm unsure it's still afloat. Documentation is rare and photos are dark and details in shadow, so there will be a part of improvisation. For that part I will take other models details as example. The scale is 1/80. Total weight will be 5 kg.

Original ship information:
Built in 1898
LOA: 92 meters
Midship beam: 11 meters
Draught: 5 meters

Here are a few photos of original yacht:

We can see that masts have been different over the years but unable to date exactly the changes. Three main difference I've noticed are the removal of all yards, then, during the first world war period, the removal of bowsprit.
Pictures #5 and #6 shows her during first world war when she was owned by US Navy. The last one I guess is later, but tell exactly which period.

The model now: I've used a kingston mouldings hull.

Stabilizers have been added, we'll see if they are of any help:

Homemade coupling:

Engine is a Saphyr or Saphir from Anton.

Boiler / gas tank / oil separator / stop valve are mounted together:

Engine, boiler and regulator have been tested all together, so main deck has been installed and other task could then follow:

Chimney have been made with drawing paper rolled three times and inside is protected by a lay of fiberglass:

The fan will supply combustion air to gas burner.

The fan is hidden:

Mats have been made with 10mm wooden sticks:

Upper deck floor under construction:

Three days later:

I couldn't resist the temptation to temporary install the masts:

Another big task was to make six rescue boats:

Well that's it for now !

That post is about SY Aphrodite. About SY Medea, members could search for it and easily find it on this forum, by the way that video is much better:

Hello everyone,

Pictures below shows work propress before above video:

Testing in swimming pool was mandatory...

A lot of details were to be done at that time, next post will show the last improvements.

Hello everyone,

During first trial, model speed was to high, not adapted for that scale, everyone agreed on that, also idle speed was difficult to hold...so I have replaced the 50mm Dia. propeller by a 40mm. It defenitly helped to get a lower speed, and increased the range of speed, even if the maximum speed is still too high. The idea of replacing the 40mm by a 30mm is tempting.
The last details added are mainly the upper deck railing. Also I've made the three masts shrouds. The main masts shrouds need to be removable so I've used magnets.

I've aslo reduced the heights of front air collectors:

Hello,

finally, those rails were not the most difficult details to build:

Hello again,

Due to a loss of flame with very light wind, combined with low ambient temperature during first trail run, I had to find a way to get more gas pressure. Gas tank location as been exchanged with condensate/oil sump tank. That new position allows gas tank to get more heat from burner and engine while running. Still gas pressure in tank is unknown, so I'll install a gauge on gas tank and make more testing to verify it's not reaching dangerous level.
I've installed a pneumatic valve as a safety shut-off valve between gas tank and gas regulator, but it's not working as per my expectation. Valve is passing way below 8 bars, gas pressure is pushing inner valve part, a new spring could help, if not I'll replace it.

The last trial on water shows that Anton Saphyr works perfectly, the sound is just so nice to hear, the closed hull make a very good sounding board.

Cheers !

Nice boat! Did you solve the gas tank problem?

Hi,
Thanks. I need an reasonable ambient temperature to get the same condition as observed before, may be this week I'll have a chance to check gas pressure. If gas pressure is too high, I'll have to insulate gas tank to reduce heat exchange, may be just with a "wall" between gas burner and tank. The best would be to have a pressure relief valve on gas tank, blowing out of model at a preset pressure setting, like on boiler.

Cheers
