Hello,
It's already been a year since I have started that new project. After the SY Medea, I have tried to reproduce another existing steam yacht but I'm unsure it's still afloat. Documentation is rare and photos are dark and details in shadow, so there will be a part of improvisation. For that part I will take other models details as example. The scale is 1/80. Total weight will be 5 kg.
Original ship information:
Built in 1898
LOA: 92 meters
Midship beam: 11 meters
Draught: 5 meters
Here are a few photos of original yacht:
We can see that masts have been different over the years but unable to date exactly the changes. Three main difference I've noticed are the removal of all yards, then, during the first world war period, the removal of bowsprit.
Pictures #5 and #6 shows her during first world war when she was owned by US Navy. The last one I guess is later, but tell exactly which period.
The model now: I've used a kingston mouldings hull.
Stabilizers have been added, we'll see if they are of any help:
Homemade coupling:
Engine is a Saphyr or Saphir from Anton.
Boiler / gas tank / oil separator / stop valve are mounted together:
Engine, boiler and regulator have been tested all together, so main deck has been installed and other task could then follow:
Chimney have been made with drawing paper rolled three times and inside is protected by a lay of fiberglass:
The fan will supply combustion air to gas burner.
The fan is hidden:
Mats have been made with 10mm wooden sticks:
Upper deck floor under construction:
Three days later:
I couldn't resist the temptation to temporary install the masts:
Another big task was to make six rescue boats:
Well that's it for now !
