1/16 HENG LONG GAZ TRUCK
« on: April 29, 2018, 02:57:50 pm »

Heng long have brought out a range of truck, the B1 American and the b24 Russian Gaz. They are 2.4 but marketed as toys, I have both so decided to work on the Gaz.

Total strip down, primed and repainted, interior painted, weathered, wood inlay in the back with benches and some other exterior embellishments added. The running gear redone, out came the 2.4 board and replaced the steering motor with a servo, the drive motor was kept but rewired, new speed controller added and receiver, so now has proportional drive and steering instead of the on-off.

Yeah, they are not quality, the 4x4 system is week and needs beefing up but I have just left stock for now, the 2.4 is toy version so is very basic, hence I stripped out.

If the US truck isn't converted as a Vietnam gun truck in some form then I am a garden gnome! The GAZ is one of my favourite trucks and it is fab to see it in large scale and drivable! Are there metal upgrade sets to come for them like there are for the tanks?

Thanks for sharing Eddie, you have done a good job  :-))

Cheers mate glad you like it. I agree that the US truck should be converted  :}

As far as I am aware there are no metal parts for these, the chassis share common components, the drive shafts are not great with plenty of play, this causes the universal joints to move and split, to solve you need to grind the metal shafts slightly and then cover the joints in brass tube and epoxy to stop the plastic splitting. I suppose you could look for other parts that would work but at £35 what do you expect really.

Just to add that this truck, the Gaz 66 can be made with various rear bodies, I have seen a fuel bowser and the hard box back. So, maybe more might be had and converted.  :D

At that price, buying some better bits for the drive train would be worth it for use over the longer term.

I have one and converting it to a command vehicle. i'm uprating the motor and drivetrain, as they are pretty poor quality. Some parts are available from Banggood and their pretty cheap.

Hi Bri, many thanks for the info on the metal parts, just had a look and they seem rather good. What are you using for the power motor and gearing as this seems to be the weakest part if you have uprated the axles etc.

I bought an NSR Spanish King 19000 rpm slot car motor from Pendle Slot Racing, my friend has fitted one in his Gaz and it runs great, very smooth indeed. The can is a bit longer, but it fits in the original mount great. I'm using the original gearbox as I can't seem to find any replacements.
I'm waiting for the alloy front and rear axles and the alloy drive shafts from Banggood, I think they will be a huge improvement on the originals.
The upgrades are costing more than the truck did %)

A fellow boatist showed me images of a new vehicle from Heng Long this morning. They call it a Horch military car, but it has influences from all over the German-Italian show. The wheels and tyres are pretty good and with some work, the body could be made more accurate.

It looks a little like an Italian FIAT artillery tractor (TL37) but the wheels are too small and the bonnet too plain. I hope this is the beginning of a long list of vehicles  O0

Would be nice, only 1/16 that I know of, at the moment, for RC, is the AD models all metal version Horch 1a or type 108 and at €500 is a tad too steep, especially when you need radio gear.

Would be nice to see a more affordable one to play about with.
