Bonding plastics
« on: May 11, 2018, 06:51:15 pm »

I have some Deans Marine micro rudders for an LCT I'm building. The hull is styrene, and the rudder posts appear to be a nylon-type red plastic. Polystyrene cement, Plastic Weld, and superglue don't work.

I know I can phone Dean's in the morning, but any ideas right now?

If your 'red plastic' is Delrin ( due to your description like nylon) you will find nothing sticks to it. It has fantastic machining properties but nothing will bond to it. Industrial applications use microwave/ultrasound to weld pieces together ( generates heat which melts the parts together)

I recently tested bonding PVC (pipe) to styrene. MEK & epoxy failed.  3M 5200, Gorilla Glue (white), and CA held.  A friend suggested PVC pipe cement, the purple stuff.  Have not tried it yet.

Let us know what works on your plastic.

I have been very impressed with Soudal Fix-All, I have used it for Wood, plastic, metal, paper and fabric.
It is like silicon but has a lot of body, very light, fills large pockets without sagging, stays flexible and can bond wet surfaces.
Strange stuff to handle but very strong and effective.
