Imara drive train
« on: June 05, 2018, 10:38:07 am »

haveing been away from model boating for over 20 years now
I decided time to get back into model boating my heils  are getting to fast now  so I managed to get hold of an early caldercraft imara twin screw kit that had been in a loft for a number of years
The kit is untouched  :-))
Am I need of some information on the range of motors that are now suitable to fit the model as I can not find any decapems to fit
Some help please

The world is your lobster nowadays :}  For torque purposes brushless outrunners require a complete rethink on motor drives, but basically you'll get more torque from them than you get from a blower motor and in a package that is a quarter of the size!

blower motors or even standard dc motors aka 500 series etc = lead acid batteries (old school)

brushless motors = LiPo batteries (new school)

but there can be lots of mixing and matching among them, as I said the world is your lobster, check google or even the local club and get plenty of advice before plumping for your system. The caveat being, if you are knowledgable about standard dc motors, stick with them.

Blower motors & lead acid batteries are old technology which works & works well. Totally reliable over many years & very good low speed control. Drive pretty well any prop that you want to connect to them. Not really suitable for fast models but brilliant for big tugs. Not as easy to source as they used to be.

Size & weight don't really matter in an Imara.

Hi 1275mini
What size props and number of blade are you planning to use ?
Reduction Gears ?

Raboesch have a chart on prop types and the maximum RPM they can handle.

Motors run one way, to have one running in the opposite direction to the just reverse the polarity. I would also advise using twin speed controllers, 2 inch/50mm four blades props will more than suffice.

1275 sounds like a Cooper S, and yes in OZ these were used by the  :police: as pursuit vehicles........[I had a standard 850 Minivan from new in 1968?........]

Now all of these power specification things are important as I believe my mini was in fact 848CC, not 850 as advertised

So with all of this power under your throttle in your Cooper S.......was great  %).... [was it in the BRG colour?]

But to answer your question...."Would two of these work in the tug"

NO  <*<......a totally inappropriate selection for the application

hi
all the imaras i have seen
were powered by two bugler motors
very reliable
 very powerful
and very low drain on your  lead acid battery

that also helped with ballast you will need
good luck with your build

A lot of Imara's use Deccaperms, these give decent performance but the gear whine makes them sound gas turbine powered. The Deccapers run about 4750 rpm so that is a good guide using 4 blade brass props.

If you're going to use reduction, then a couple of 545's on 12 volts at about 3 or 4:1 would provide ample motive force. I favour belt drives over gears- silent and largely maintenance free.

If I want an idea of how fast a boat will go at a specific RPM with a prop I know the pitch of, I assume the prop will be at best 60% efficient (model props rarely exceed this I find) and use the following formula.

Prop pitch (in mm) x RPM x 0.00002= speed in mph

Clearly there are many other factors influencing speed, props blade area, style of hull etc. But it gives you a baseline to work from.
