Marblehead and Half Marblehead.
« on: June 05, 2018, 12:51:56 pm »

Hello.

A question.

Is a half Marblehead a true model yacht class under International Classification?

Second question.

Is a Half Marblehead just that, a half sized marblehead of full size design built to half the dimensions in all respects, hull, sail and ballast?

I see that Cliff Grove at Grove Model yachts builds 1/2 M's so gather they are about but have not seen a dedicated 1/2M plan. Not sure if they exist, or have ever.

Can anyone help as I am keen to build a half size M as I have a few full sized Trad M's but would prefer something old.

Thanks.

Hayden,

I can't answer your first question, but I posted a series of articles about the half Marbleheads, from old Model Maker magazines on the Model Boats site (see link). The yachts are in the Vic Smeed thread, #23 and the magazine description should help answer your question. Should you require higher resolution plans for the Smeed designed yachts, Water Baby and Sea Urchin, message your email. I think some of the Grove pond yachts are from these designs.

No, "Half Marblehead" was only an idea/proposal by Victor Smeed, but never settled into a class... That is why I've recorder these as "one of a kind":

Nearest to a half M is a RG65/DF65 I would
think.
Having all three, Give me a half gale and my
M on B rig for a raw sail.

Tony.

That is interesting about Vic Smeeds designs, I know he built many models but did not consider that he tried to introduce a half M. Also I am a fan of Vic Smeeds earlier designs and are building Moonmist and Bustler, well both half built at present.

A past club member of our model club did have a small yacht and it could very well have been these designs, I never asked him but thats many years ago. I certainly would be interested in building another Smeed design if i am going that route for a half M. I will see how that drawing come out and have a read of the material you have sent.

I do own an RG65 kit that is not yet assembled. Obvously Vis Smeed was ahead of his time once again thinking that a handy size half M would be ideal to give good performance and also allow for easy transport. It was some 50 years later before the plastic RG65 became popular.

Just to clarify the history part here:
- G-65 class exists in Argentina since 1950 (no radio at that time)
- RG-65 class exists since 1978, also introduced in Argentina.
- "Plastic" DF-65 (aka Dragon Force 65) was introduced in 2013 only after the huge success of the RG-65 class...

What did the early G-65 look like?

Obviously not like the RG-65 of today.

There are not so many pictures - and those that I can find don't have many details:
