Trent new build... any tips would be helpful...
« on: June 11, 2018, 12:24:45 pm »

Hi Guys, OK my Arun build has been put back on the waiting list/hold ( Long story one which I find very amusing as well as others  <*<   %) )

So my efforts while waiting for my new wheel house are shifted towards the Trent..

Having never built a Life boat before i am new to all this part and any advice is welcomed, as I know you are all detail queens. ( take that as a compliment ) as I will do my UPMOST!! to follow the letter of the law and copy your attention to detail..

So ... my project... it's a part built Trent and I am guessing rightly or wrongly it's a Slipway model of past..

Here it is..

so here is it....

the Grey paint I get it... and I understand it's needed but I will be removing it to paint the boat and then reapply it I think.. as I will have an edge I don't want on there...

Any details tips and advice please do post up...

Also I am not sure what number boat to go for??

thank you so much.. OK a few questions

Nice boat BTW.

I have 3 drawings
2 brass sheets of parts
1 complete set of windows I think

I don't by the looks of it have

Life boy's
Life boy box's
Steering wheels
clearly no railings but that's a trip to the model shop for some of that I understand.
I don't have a rear wheel house door
I don't have one of the 3 hatches on the front

To throw into the mix

I have an idea that's to Neil posting up a picture of 14-01 that I wouldn't mind building a boat that is NOT the normal.. eg 14-01 is a ONE off and is currently sat at Poole as a training boat.

the difference is the Flying deck has the Pod ( sorry I am not all up to speed on names ) located 2"'s back from it's current position and this would mean I would have to cut and shunt the plastic about and I am happy to do that..

I take on board the idea of adding in more strenght to the wheel house it's not like wood is it.. so yes i will need to add in some bits prob wood to be honest ..

Currently it looks a right up hill battle I am looking at so hence I am keen for any help or ideas I have bought what you see as a part built boat

I found a great app that shows me where 14-01 is RIGHT NOW!!! in the world and it's just down the road from me !! in Poole.. so I recon a trip out to see if I can take some photo's :-)

Hi Surfer71,
I have not built this kit, but if this was mine to do, I would start off by installing the motors, ESCs and the RC gear, and getting all that working before moving on to anything else.
There was a comprehensive kit review in the July and August 1998 editions of Model Boats magazine. If you haven't got these already, they are well worth a read. I can email you photos of the articles if you like. The photos of the kit contents only shows 2 sheets of etched brass, so I believe you are not missing any if you have 2.
I know I have a General Arrangement Drawing of 14-01 in my possession, and I wanted to post a photo, but I cannot for the life of me find where I put them. I will have a search this week and see if I can locate them.

Yes Neil I bought the Arun Hull as my starting point and then as I was sorting that out Colin ( Nice chap from up north ) posted up this Trent and well... I had to have it for my lad and I to build so all of a sudden we have 2 life boats!!! on the go and with a 3rd in the back ground.. if you count an Airfix model as well then 4!!

Chris yes please anything to help would be great and yes I think that's a great Idea.. I will do some research to what motors to fit in there.. and also to go either lipo or nicad.. the big debate..

But yes I will also shoot the hull primer this weekend just so I can start to fettle that.. Painting is the easy part to me..

so any ideas on motors ? I will google a few pre builds..

Yes the 14-01 is different and I have found some plastic card sheet so I can start to think how to do it..

I used two watercooled 850s in mine, ran well, attitude on the water was good. 850s Motors old hat now since the LiPos and brushless have arrived. Just be careful that you do not overpower the boat or it look rediculous with the bow up in the air, nemesis

very true after my steep learning curve on my lauch boat going so fast it jumped out the water!!!! LOL 1250kv motor on a 40cm boat ..

yep lesson learnt .. so hence why I am asking this time LOL!!

thanks I will look these up.. but so far I have your ones, Chris has 500 in his and its too slow hence he is changing his.. and the other chap has 640 and lipo's and it goes like a rocket .. poss too fast.. so i am gathering what folk have used to work out the medium..

Just finished a 39" Arun, will look at what brushless I have in there and let you know, about Sunday PM, after the club. Whatever you do, build it as light as you can, when I built mine I was fighting weight all the time, That is why I am suggesting LiPos.Nemesis

If you search the lifeboat section
For Author IKB on page 3
Alex used 3548 900kv motors
11.1V lipo in his Trent
There is a vid showing the speed.
If he is still active on here
You should send him a pm
