Tyne Class Lifeboat help needed
« on: June 16, 2018, 12:52:29 pm »

I am currently building a Tyne Class Lifeboat using the sarik hobbies Hull and plans. I am now at the stage where I am ready to paint the hull. The problem I have got is that I don't know what paint to use in some photo's I have seen the red looks a gloss red and in other photo's it looks matt and more like red oxide.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi  I might be wrong on this but I think some Lifeboats had white hull bottoms if stored in a Life boat house and some had red anty foul paint  if  kepted  afloat in a harbour or river lots on here know a lot more about this then I do  I think it was on some classes/mk's  but maybe not all.
                                                 Regards Howard

you are quite correct in that statement Howard, until someone developed a whiteish cream antifouling for the Tamar lifeboats, and this creamish anti fouling was then also used on the very first few of the Shannon boats, until that was changed to a dark anthracite colour for all Shannon's, and all were [ I think] painted in the anthracite colour...…………..as for the Tamars, I don't know what colour they are now.

Thanks for the information and pictures Neil, it's also nice to put a face to a name, I have been reading your posts for the last year or so but only recently joined Mayhem.
I am loosely modelling mine on the ex-Whitby Tyne, City Of Sheffield, so it will have to be the red antifouling when I can find a decent paint match.
I will also post some pictures of it on here when I work out how to do it.  {:-{

Halfords red primer is what most people use Howard...….in their rattle cans.........put on in thin layers and built up to a good lustre.

certainly not the prettiest of faces, Howard, lol.

Another question :
Will I have to seal the Halfords red primer with lacquer or will it be ok without. Chris

its better to seal it with a matt or satin  spray, purely because the red oxide has a rough finished texture, and can actually pick up lint fluff from your clothing and hold it as fluff dust to the painted surface.  O0 O0

i'm still looking for the others Howard...….haven't forgotten...……….but I reckon it would be easier finding another Koh-i-Noor diamond in my workshop than boat parts at the moment, lol.
