A bit more information would be helpful.

Such as-

Are you planning on retaining original gearbox or going direct drive.

Are you looking for more performance or the same speed.

Will you be running the same system voltage- 12 volts for that model I believe.

Okay, something like this would give it plenty of poke- https://hobbyking.com/en_us/multistar-elite-3508-268kv-high-voltage-endurance-motor.html?___store=en_us

May still be a little high revving, but it will certainly spin the prop okay. Be mindful that the hull shape has more drag than a Lily Savage convention, so it's a case of diminishing returns when looking for speed, or in other words build a skipjack if you want pace. Also bear in mind the current delivering capacity of your battery pack.

Please define normal.

Lipo, Nimh or sealed lead acid can be used with brushless, but watch your current draw, and ensure the batteries can deliver if you're going for performance. Lipo are best in that respect.

What's the 3700 and 4800 referring to, is this something to do with Engel?

Most brushless motors commonly available are going to be a bit too high revving without some form of gearing. The motor i posted earlier is of the lowest KV motors available that retains a sensible size.

The Engel Nautilus is approximately 1/32 scale, and the prop size is around 4", that's a big old blade to chuck around.

Hi Raven,

This discussion link may give you some useful information.

http://www.theassociationofmodelsubmariners.com/t1427-going-brushless?highlight=brushless

You might also think about using one of the Mtroniks Hydra combinations (brushless ESC and motor). I use the smallest one (the 15 I think) in all my subs now. Some small problems over the years but Mtroniks provide good after sales service.

Thinking about your sub, some people go for direct drive but you have a big prop and so gearing may be best but try it without first. (I still always use 3:1) I mostly do subs with twin props now so I use two motors. You may wish to step up a size for your model but you are only replacing a brushed 540.

Hi Raven,

I can understand your uncertainty about going brushless. (I was in a similar predicament about 4 years ago!)

But they do provide plenty of benefits for model submarines - reduced space and weight being two.

The Hobbyking route is more technically risky but will probably be cheaper.

I would go the Mtroniks combo route again, I think. (I don't have any links with the company other than as a satisfied customer!) Have a look at this link:

http://www.mtroniks.net/prod/Boat-Speed-Controls/G2-Hydra30-System.htm

Getting the right motor and prop combination is always a little hit and miss but you can do some "tweaking". In order of difficulty:

- Try direct drive with the existing prop. Do an "in-bucket" test and measure the current (if you can) or run time.

- If the current is still too high (much more than 5 Amps say) change the prop or take some pitch off. (You can sometimes twist blades.)

- Still too high, put in a gear reduction. (3:1 works for me)

Some of my experienced sub enthusiasts go straight to direct drive and make changes to the setup on the brushless ESC but it sounds to me that you need a more "out of the box" solution to get you started with brushless.

Hi Raven,

It probably does sound confusing but in practice most things work out!

The 15 and 30 will refer to the maximum current draw. Choosing the 30 will give you a little more design leeway  but you should be no where near that anyway.

3 inch dia. is a big prop for model submarines, I agree.  Maybe you need to get some advice from Mtroniks or Tug enthusiasts who use brushless.

All the best!
