Those Lesro Sun hull's  are truly in the top 5 of all model boat hulls ever commercially made!   :-))

... and those window cutouts look good too.
Also, the lifeboat appears to be well carved.
It'll be interesting to see this one coming together  :-)

Ray.

Thanks Ray, they were a pain to cut out but look OK. The lifeboat may be a little flat bottomed, but I am happy with it. Now to order some portholes before I start on the lower part of the superstructure

Have several pics I took of her in Gibraltar (in colour), too big to load on this site,, if you want copies send me your email address. Have the same kit in my garage, keep meaning to get it down and make it. Have a personal interest in her, as my father was chief engineer on her for several years, even went with him for a 24 hour shift.

That looks good!
Also good to see the citadel paints being used as part of this hobby as well as the warhammer.  :-))
I've done likewise on a number of my own projects.

Ray.

I always thought this pic was of the 21, but it is her sister ship the 22, but I thought it might be useful for detail of the front of the wheelhouse, she is on the Belfast tow when she first arrived on the thames.

Have just started on my Lesro kit, looks nicely cut wood work, fitting the two bulkheads in at the moment. But the hull moulding is very nice. All the best and hope to see your build on this site. David

Fantastic David, I need to sit down and work out the rest of the superstructure as mine did not come with any parts for it, so I have to draw up my own.

There is one thing I remember as a young teenager, I went for a 24hour shift on her as my Dad was her chief engineer then. I remember going up on the flying bridge and the master was sitting on a wood stool and he used a tiller arm to control her no steering wheel. The tiller was about 1/2" thick 3" deep and about 3.5 ft long, the VHF unit was a small basic one with a metal speaker. It was interesting as we were the stern drag to a Royal Mail vessel, we went up the dock and through the swing bridge into the Vic. It was as we were going through the cutting that the Royal Mail stern  counter lifted and came down and hooked a lighter. Soon we were dragging a large number of lighters and the whole was held until a tosher tug could get in and drag the lighter clear. In those days lighters and barges could enter the docks 14 days before and 14 days after a ship enters and leaves dock charges free. Also then any cargo not landed but went overside into a barge did not pay landing charges. When PLA insisted on all cargo be landed and go into the shed, then all the lighterage work finished and container work took over at Tilbury. Also containers could be stuffed over 10 miles from the docks did not need port registered workers, so that finished break bulk work in the docks plus when APL built their 5 large container ships such as the Priam. 55 break bulk ships went to the scrap yard, they at first carried 27,000t of bunkers and 17,000t of cargo. The engineer was given a cassette tape before sailing to tell which fuel tank to use and how to transfer fuel to maintain stability. They eventually had their steam plants removed and diesels fitted, but they were 14 days U/k to Japan, my friend of some time ago was chief mate on the Priam becoming a junior captain in the company(blue funnel) used to tell me about them over a pint.

Does anyone know for sure if below the waterline was copper coloured as shown by Lesro?

I may be corrected, but I believe it was a thin white boot topping with the usual dull red anti foul paint.

Well I have done the deck, engine and shaft, now contemplating making up the anchor stowage box. But all hold at the moment, because it is to cold to work in the garage, the wood glue is taking all day to set instead of 30 minutes. But have noticed that the real vessel aft had a top only over her steering gear not as the model plans have right across the stern, so that is next to put right when it warms up a bit.

Found these two pics in a book of mine, not the 21 but they do show the colour scheme well for the original Alexander towing at Gravesend.

Hello, first post on this forum!

I was wondering if anyone can remember the Sun tug kit which had the ply skinned hull? It had 4 skins per side and was quite complex.
I started it as a kid but never finished and have been looking for one for a while.

Admittedly, the GRP hull is probably the better way to go

Hi sjl,

Not heard of that one, was it a plans / scratch build?

Pretty certain it was a lesro sun kit, but this was in the 70’s and i think they changed to a grp hull later. No bad thing since it required 4 ply skins per side and was definitely complex, the reason i gave up on mine. Getting nostalgic and thinking of having another go. Looks like i will have to go for the grp hulled kit

Bought a set of modelling plans on ebay the other day, the davits supplied by Lesro for the kit are wrong and went into the bin. But this plan is correct.
