For the last few days I've been religiously reading every unread post on the Forum. And the next time I login I see most of the ones I've already read, plus the new ones, with the result that my 'Unread Posts' list is now something like 30 posts long! 

Hitting the 'Mark all posts as read' button at the end of a session produces this error message:-



And if I do re-login it says they're all marked, but I STILL get an ever increasing list every time.

It's getting past ridiculous now, so is it a known fault and if so, how do I fix it please?

have you tried clearing your cache for this site,
press f12, this will bring a whole lot of developer stuff on the screen, then go to the reload page button and right click, you want the clear page cache and hard reload option.

It's not a fault that I have encountered before. Perhaps Martin (Admin) may be able to help if you don't have any success with Grendel's suggestion.
