Paddle steamer hulls
« on: June 23, 2019, 03:32:38 pm »

I have been searching high and low for a source of paddle steamer hulls as I want to build from scratch.   Can I? No.   Has anyone any info please?   Thanks,  Pete

Models by Design have a 1:48 scale hull for the Director Class paddle tug in their Kingston Mouldings Hulls range.

Scratch building normally means building the hulls yourself. If you are willing to tackle that then there are lots of interesting paddle steamer plans available.

Usually the practical problem is either sourcing or contructing suitable paddle wheels. Otherwise it is just like any other build except that commercial paddle steamers had very narrow hulls so you really do need to keep the topweight down to a minimum for stability.

When I was young & dinosaurs roamed the earth and paddle steamers roamed the Bristol Channel the best of them was Bristol Queen. She was built by Charles Hill in Bristol just after the war and was a very good ship in rough weather - much better than the rest of the fleet despite the fact that Charles Hill had very little experience of paddlers. This was always put down to the fact that Charles Hill had spent the war building River Class Frigates and Bristol Queen was a slightly modified frigate hull adapted for paddles.

Thanks to all.
Hellboy, looks worth consideration, Colin, I am not that talented, Tug Fan, you are about my age then (or younger).  Pete
