Hi Russ, I would imagine that they wore black uniforms with black caps, they still would have had "whitefronts on the sailors and white shirts" for the officers and anyone in working rig I think it may have been dark grey at that time, but, not sure.

Hi Russ, we do, but, they are more modern looking, Deans do various ones also in a more of an older uniform look.

Hi Russ,

This is from one source (Rule Britannia by Peter Padfield) I'm afraid and will need confirmation.

Officers - Sea Duty - Dark blue double breasted jackets without tails, similar to modern jackets but a bit more box like. No epaulettes. Black cravat or tie over white wing-collar shirt. Black boots and dark blue trousers. Black cloth peaked cap with gilt band, crown and anchor badge and the top is a lot smaller than current.
WO's - Sea Duty - Single breasted with ties - definitely not cravats. Caps were often more box like and less rigid. Closer to 'Engine Driver' type.
Other Ranks - Working Rig - Was apparently self made (It seems that standard uniforms were only issued after 1907) although there was a basic pattern. Colour was either blue serge or white cotton duck and it was similar to current although, again, the blouse was squarer and appears shorter. The scaff was also slightly shorter but the lanyard was there. The hat was a smaller, softer version of current, either all all blue or white/blue.
Often still bare feet.

Hope this is useful.

Hi I have several Christian Symonds prints from the Charles Rathbone book Her Majesty's Navy its deeds and battles printed by JS Virtue c. 1896.  The prints show ratings of the period in whites with bare feet and blue caps and in later blue uniform.
I can e-mail scaned copies but cannot post as each one is over 300KB which is above the limit and I don't know how to reduce them. this is the only thats small enough

Also, if you go onto www.cyberheritage.co.uk, you'll see loads of black & white photos from the period.

Worth a look.
