What's the temperature in your shop today?
« on: July 23, 2018, 02:02:32 pm »

Mine's a sweltering 35.5 Degrees Celsius, in the shade. Can anyone beat that?

Currently 38.8, with both windows and door wide open. Has been up to 43 once last week.

All windows and doors open, current indoor temp 37, outdoors in full sun 44. The joys of living in Spain! you've not lived until you are asleep on your feet because its still too hot to lay down in bed. Many are the nights I have got up several times and jumped in the shower to cool down. Last year I took it to extremes and was swimming in the pool at 3am just because it was so hot.

Disgustingly hot here today at RAF Akrotiri! On average we’re getting in the high 30s but our intake temp probes have registered 46 and at one point 51!!! And that’s on an aircraft that didn’t have engines running!
I know last out here in August it hit 52 on the pan and I was drinking close to 4 litres of water an hour- not good! No wonder I lost three stone in weight! It’s not just the heat, the humidity has been awful at night, especially working in a metal hangar.

My studio is on a mezzanine and it must have been around the early thirties today. I took my boots off and sat with them on an aluminium plate placed on the floor. A big grey cloud went over and did nothing except make it a bit cooler.

The mid to high 30s is indeed very hot for the UK, but a normal summer here. Somehow even 28 seems hot in Britain, I have been there when it was that hot and it seemed much hotter than a similar temperature here at home. Perhaps it's because the buildings aren't designed to cope with high temperatures? We are in the middle of our winter at present and, while the morning temps are from -1 to 3, it warms up to the low to mid 20s, and we live in the sub tropics. It's much colder in southern NSW and Victoria, as well as on the tablelands to the west of us.

I REMEMBER in Canberra, Peter it was so cold in the mornings that on two consecutive days it registered -13 and -15 before warming up to a balmy +15...……..and on the coldest of the two days it was so cold that it froze the oil filled steering box on my '51 MG TD, and reversing out the drive I shot up the rockery bed of the neighbours house over the road, being unable to steer............who says it doesn't get cold in OZ,  {-) %%

Here in Denmark I got 33°C outside and 29°C in the workshop  %%
No AC in the house and the heat will continue the next week at least, one is only allowed to use propane BBQ's due to the drought and danger for flash fires, and yes everything is now brown.

Last year were one of the wettest and coldest summers in DK and this year has already broken several records as the driest and warmest in many years.
I have had to buy a vine-refrigeratory to protect my vine  <*<

It's very cold in Canberra now Neil, although there's a lot of hot air coming from Parliament House......as usual {-) . However, Canberra is 900 km south of us.

Got up at 7 this morning its been a horrible sticky humid night. Temperature in the lounge has stuck at 33c all night even with leaving every single window in the house open. Will get much hotter inside today once the sun starts cooking the outer walls of the house again.
I do wish we had aircon!

We are not sure what to expect in Oz.
Severe floods in Queensland, Drought in N.S.W. and last evening we had gales, thunder and lightning and torrential rain for an hour in Melbourne but it did not put out the bushfires. >>:-(
Temperatures this week from 47 c. to 15 c.  %%

Whilst wondering what to make when in the doldrums - why not make your own aircon device, it should be relatively simple.
A car battery
a car radiator fan
a car window screen wash pump
flexible tubing
a cloth mat

basically - build two trays to hold water (garden planters say window sill type), build a frame that holds one at the top and one at the bottom, with the car radiator fan held between, the tubing connects both with the washer pump in the circuit, the top tray has a small cut out along the top of one edge where the cloth mat is fixed to hang over so it falls into the bottom tray, the slot is deeper than the mat) the battery 12v transformer powers the fan and the pump.

the top tray is filled with water to the brim, as it is soaked up by the mat it soaks the mat and if the water overflows the slot it then flows down the mat until it completely soaks it and then fills into the bottom tray, the pump then takes the water to the top tray, filling the top tray so it completely soaks the mat is the main idea, the fan then blows air through the mat, cooling any air, the circulating water then keeps refreshing the wet mat, just need to have a porous cloth mat to allow the air to pass through and an auto water refill for the top tray due to evaporation and water blown off by the fan.

Any thoughts?

A nice comfy 21 degrees in my indoor workshop right now.
Looking out the window I can't help thinking "God help (model) mariners on a night like this"
