In laymen's terms the gunwhale (pronounced gunnell) can simply be thought of as the small wall where the hull sides extend above the deck. In the picture of the tug above the gunwhale runs all the way around the boat.

The image from the Wiki people correctly depict the Gunwhale yes......but the also point to the stern towing Eye an term it as Hydraulic pins  %).....and a propeller shaft as a tail shaft  {-) ...and is the Port side navigation running light a Morse Lamp?

These people are only Journalists Copy pen pushers  O0 & obviously have no one checking their work apart from journalistic spelling errors

And they label the port navigation light as a morse light, and the towing hook as a winch.

Maybe 6/10 - could do better!  :D

To give a simple and I hope clear reply, it's the bit that sticks up from the hull sides above the deck level. protects the deck from the water.

Not quite, it is the top rail on that "wall". The side wall is called a bulwark.

The labelling on that illustration is certainly bulwarks...

Not quite Martin...as Niall correctly notes.........

The arrow for Gunwale, clearly points to the Bulwark......

Will it ever end?.....are you on a $ retainer from the Wiki people to correct their errors?

Goes to show how many folk fell into the internet trap so far of quoting potentially a good diagram, but labelled entirely wrong in llts of things!!!!! Shame really, normally I like wikipedia.

When I was doing my degree, the gunwale was the top most plank (plate) surrounding the ship or boat (and that's what I always understood it to be).  The upright vertical faces emiting significantly from the shell at or near the shear strake were usually always called the bulwark. There doesn't have to be a bulwark, in the case of a rowing boat, or sailing boats, kayaks etc etc, the top plank at the deck edge is the Gunwale.  As others have pointed out the derivation of the term.

So top uppermost planking/board  above the deck, all the way around the boat, ship, tug etc

....pretty much that, very eloquently put rather than confusing it.  Wkipedia also says...

"In modern boats, it is the top edge of the side where there is usually some form of stiffening."

(which is still generlly true)

This diagram is as good or bad or worse -equally googlable (of course it doesn't necessarily hold for traditional wooden boats but the top plank as far as I know is always called the gunwhale).  It's just a darn site better than quoting that awful wikipedia page which is wrong on so many things...

The top plank on a wooden boat and the top row of plates on a steel boat is called the sheer
strake. The top edge of the sheer strake, the frames inside it and the stringer form the gunwales.
Jerry.

If there is no edge there can be no "gunnells" i.e.nowhere to mount or rest a gun.

Getting back now to the original use of the term. On the old wooden ships the Wales were sections of planking with increased thickness to give extra strength to the hull. The main wales were at the point of greatest beam nearest the waterline. The gunwales were at the level of the gunports so were split up by the ports. The highest were the chainwales (channels) where extra strength was needed for the lower mountings for the shrouds.

Gunwales: The upper edge of a ship's side; in large vessels, the uppermost planking, which covers the timber-heads and reaches from the quarter-deck to the forecastle on either side; in small craft, a piece of timber extending round the top side of
hull.

The expressions 'full to the gunwales' or 'packed to the gunwales' were first used as literal references to heavily loaded ships. 'Gunwales' may have been a 15th century word, but there's no mention of the phrase until the 19th century, as in the Unitarian periodical, The Monthly Repository, 1834:

This is the Island of the Golden Fruit. Look, yonder they come! boats - one, two, three, five, a dozen! all laden up to the gunwales with the juicy balls.
