1886 K.U.K. Sperber torpedo boat
« on: August 06, 2018, 01:49:55 am »

Working on a 63 inc 1/50 scale Austro-Hungarian torpedo boat prototype. The hull is printed and I am at the running system lay out. I need some helpful ideas (have some of my own) on how to make part of the dack removable and also keep the water out. The problem comes from the fact that the deck has a shallow curve to it. Thanks in advance. Joseph P.S. I tried to load some photos but the site is asking me to sign in but I am signed in. Will try later.

Hi Yoshka
Welcome to the forum.
A few photos of one of my boats with a sunken sealed hatch.
I use door sealer foam strips with 10mm square magnets.

Yoshka, I think you have to have a certain number of posts before you are allowed to add photos. Maybe one of the moderators will advise.  Let us know where you are helps, that will be one post at least, just keep gossiping for a little while.  Interesting subject. Any history you can share, the real boat, your model, yourself etc ?

I thought it was something like that so here we go.I design and fly mostly RC airplanes so this is my first foray into RC boating. My interest in the K.U.K. navy is because Having been born in Transylvania I had an uncle who was part of that Navy plus I like early naval design. I can see photos posted here now but still can't post. I will keep trying.

Hi Yoshka,
If you're building the same as RC Groups forum you will be at 1:24 and not 1:50 so you'll have a weight of over 6.5Kg to play with so you could lay a complete double deck. In other words lay a flat deck of ply and then a second complete foam curved deck over the top. A few neodym magnets will hold the second deck in place. You'll need to get rid of that battery :-))
The only think you'll need to watch is getting a twist in a 63inch hull but decent framing both ways should sort that out.
Your sketch of your basic idea is good. Just carry it right along the boat rather than sections, with just a single big cutout wherever you need it. No sunken screw-holes etc.

Hello Tony
Yes ,this is the same build. Thanks for catching the scale mistake. Great people think alike as you can see from my revised drawing idea. What is wrong with the battery pray tell? It was suggested by Harbor Models.

Hi Yoshka,
Are you removing the whole deck area as one or are you just taking a section? The reason I ask is that if it's the whole deck and you're using sheet ply for the upper deck then you could have problems with getting curves in two directions, i.e. fore and aft and side to side.
I've sketched a poss alternative. If you search for "Descartes" on the forum, there are some pics of a build where the "lid" is everything above the waterline. The battery is fine but I've found that a long thin hull seems to sail better if the weight is distributed along the hull and also you may have to shift weight about to get the balance right and I reckon its easier with smaller batteries low down.
Anyhow, it's all subjective anyway. It's a lovely project and it'll be impressive on the water :-)) Cheers
Tony

Thanks for the reply. I was going to enclose everything except where there is a need to access mechanicals or electricals. I have pretty much settled on a similar arrangement as you have drawn up. Plywood deck and printed upper parts attached. I will make the printed parts removable with magnets where needed. I have also bought a smoke generator and will do some lights also. As far as the battery I am still open to suggestions on the lay out and might use several if need be for better balance.

Hi Yoshka,

Sorry, I'm a traditionalist and old and I'd forgotten about the possibility of printing the deck {:-{ .

Tony, feeling a bit small!

Layout is really about what fits and floats.

Hi Yoshka
The problem with the battery is the height, not the weight.
If you use a Lipo battery on it's side they are about 25mm. which lowers the boat's main weight to below or near the water line.
The lower the weight, the more stable the boat !!!

Very interesting! I've seen the pics on RC Groups. Can you say what material, print rules (resolution, wall thickness, etc) and also what printer you've used please? Also some idea of the surface finish, a close up maybe? Thanks very much for posting this!
