"Dorothy-June" Prawner & Trap boat.
« on: August 20, 2018, 02:39:05 am »

Hi there, this model is of my Grandfather's boat "Dorothy-June" named after my Grandmother & Aunty as you will see she won't win any prizes for being the best looking boat at the wharf ,one of your typical back yard builds back in the early days, she was 36 ft in length ,they built her at the Belongil  at Byron Bay N.S.W Australia , in 1955 to replace their smaller boats they had lost the previous year when 99 % of the Byron Bay Jetty Fleet was lost (along with a large portion of the Byron Bay Jetty) in the February 1954 Cyclone, she was built to work from the Brunswick Heads River ( about 10 miles up the coast from Byron Bay) thus 1 of the first 3 boats to start the Brunswick Heads Fleet off .
Photos are  1-  same deal the model is 1:16 scale  3/4" - 1' , As no original plans had to go by photo's (so tempted to put bit of kick in her deck ,but stuck to original look )                   2 - frames etc cut out                   3 & 4 - Bow & stern view of her frames in position.                   5 - Showing her in the centre , 2 of the others already build and been put on the site ....Cheers.....

I take it the black marks on the frame edges are the defined width/curvature, with you sanding back the ply forward or aft to produce a fair planking curve?

(Neat idea - I just sand away and hope I'm not removing what I didn't oughta!)

That's a veritable fleet you have on the go there. It looks like the boats yards must have done when rebuilding the fishing industry after that cyclone you mentioned. Lovely work as per usual  :-))

Another masterpiece from the Adele Fisheries boatyard Brian :-))  You're definitely going to need a bigger house, or a shed in the back yard {-)

What do you use to glue in the paper strips? Does it stain the timber or can any excess be sanded/wiped off?
That's some pretty good freehand cutting of the card to get them all she same at such a small size.
Do you cut all of your own planking too?

Hi Steve, with the cardboard strips i try to cut them the same thickness or less (is slightly better) than the 1.5 mm decking strips ,I found if slightly higher its better to skim it with a sharp chisel ,than to sand as it has a habit of spreading , I just use super glue but wipe excess with a  rag straight away, never had any staining from the cardboard when I varnish it, generally buy the planking strips. cheers.

Afternoon , next batch . 1 - decking back deck and lift out areas. 2 - Planking her bulwarks ( she only had 9-10 inch bulwarks ,so with her dog box w-house she looked out of proportion) 3 - First primer coat sanded back ready for second coat. 4 - Sitting beside a model of the fathers trap prawn trawler "Debrene-Adele-I" (I made her in 1988)  the Father built her in the back yard 4 yrs after the "Dorothy-June" was built , "D-A" was launched 1959.. 5 - Start of the w-house ( the model behind finished her last week will put that build up after this one ) cheers  :-)

Hi there ,well next section of the build. 1-2-3 Constructing the w-house, an easy one for a change  :-)) , they didn't worry about looks back then, or room for electronics, she only had a compass & steering wheel when first launched. 4 - Bow view of her. 5 - Probably most of you guys use this item all the time, i got sick of lifting and turning the models from one side to the other doing measurements, then had one of those bright ideas, the ones that don't come along to often ( nearly had to sit down  :o ) of using a Lazy Susan to sit the models on , why didn't I think of it earlier ?????????, only thing is not to have it too close to the wall when spinning it around . 6 - Side view of her and her trawl winch....cheers.

The turntable, or lazy Susan, is very useful, I made one a number of years ago from an old microwave turntable. The TT sits on a piece of circular ply fitted to a bearing from a discarded computer hard drive (I never throw anything away)  %) , we are away in our caravan at present, or I would post some pictures. I find the TT very useful for spray painting, particularly small items, although I have used it for boat hulls, as well as other large items.

Hi Peter , yes it makes you wonder when you see or think of a simple solution to something why we didn't do it earlier, well you didn't miss steaming your boats around today too wet down here ,so had to put the launching of the "C-Manda" off till next sailing day,,,Well next photos 1 - Trawl winch   2 & 3 - Her trawling A-frame etc, 4 - Fairlead for the bow,(never lost an item before) Lost it didn't I  >:-o , spent about 3 hrs over a couple days going through every thing from top of the bench to down on the carpet praying ( not) so had to admit defeat and did what I should have done after the first half hour, yep made another one (its going to turn up now ????). 5 - the exhaust and bow hand rails....cheers..

Hi there, next photos are ,,,1 - the sides second and last coat of white gloss ( Dorothy-June ,smaller hull),   2 - bits and pieces all primered up ready for couple coats of gloss. 3 - Putting the Vinyl names on the life rings, I seem to always run out of the lettering I need (can u actually buy sheets with the whole card with just the same letters on ?) 4 - After i put the lettering on gave her a spray with the clear laquer ,and it bubbled in 2 sections only ( where I'm pointing to ) and my wife wonders why I swear at times ???.   5 - Giving her bottom her last coat (always spray the last coat on )...cheers

Always excellent, never less. I was looking at the winch system and wondered if the drive was a modified Car or truck axle? The gearbox looks very like a Differential casing! That is a good example of upcycling  :-))
