Which speed controller for a 380 motor
« on: September 09, 2018, 09:47:57 pm »

Apologies if this has been bought up before.
Would a Mtroniks Viper marine 15amp speed controller be suitable to use with a 380 motor using a 7.2volt battery. I am upgrading my HFM ORSV. Built many years ago with older equipment. Just coming back to the hobby after many years away, so any help would be appreciated.
ThanksAlan

I've been running  MFA 380s on 10amp esc's for years and have had no problems, so a Viper 15 should be fine :-))

Yes, no problem. You probably know not to put too large a propeller on the model. That's the only thing that would cause a problem with the set up. One thing though, are you sure the motor is a 380, and not a 385?. The 380 motors I've used go up to 6 volts, but maybe there are some other variants. Anyway, a 385 will be fine as well.

If your motor is a M F A unit it stalls a just 12 amps at 7.2 volts so your speedo will be OK. But like a earlier post stated fitting a large prop could change the characteristics of the motor. Golden rule always fit a fuse see info sheet from M tronicks.

Thanks Brian, Chas and Stan for your replies.

Your right Brian it is a MFA 385 and not the 380. I am using the standard prop and shaft that came with the original kit. The old setup had two sets of D cell batteries bought from Medway models.
I have just bought an Over lander 2000MAH 7.2 Volt Battery from Howe's that I bought for the Aeronaut Mowe 2 that I am building. I intend to use this for the moment, but will probably upgrade later.
The wife has just bought me the Hobby Engine Southampton %% . Must say very impressed. Leaving it standard for the moment, but may have a dabble with it later. The hobby has changed a lot since I was last involved, but now that retirement has come I cant wait to get back into it.
Thanks again for all your help. It is much appreciated.
Thanks

HI Alan thought you might like to see this. Three 385 running on a 11.1 lipo speed controller is over the top at 30 amps but had it spare. The model is a plastic conversation  the Elco P T boat

Your 385 will only draw 2 to 3 amps, so no problems with your speed controler.

Hi Alan the fuse fitted in the Elco is rated at 10 amps. The stall current for each motors is 3 amps times this by 3 equals 9amps nearest fuse value 10amps.I could have fitted a 15 amp controller but I had a 30amp controller doing nothing. If you have any queries in future on M F A motors all the information you need can be found on there website or call them and speak to technical. The golden rule for future is to find out the stall current for the motor and find a speedo rated above the stall current value.

Thanks Chas and Stan

Like the Elco P T boat Stan. Nice setup. Should imagine it to be very fast. Ordered the 385 and Mtroniks controller from Howes. Will try to post some photo's soon.

Thanks again for the information.
