Model Boat Club Insurance
« on: March 10, 2019, 07:42:15 pm »

The possibility of a new sailing water has raised the need to arrange public liability insurance for our club. The last time I was involved with this we used Walker Midgely, but I can't find any details for their model club policies on the web. Does anyone know if they are still in the model club insurance business?
I would also be interested in any other options (apart from the MPBA).
I have found two Protectivity and Access. Anyone use either of these?

Thanks for any input.

Hi Barrie

If you want to contact Walker Midgley try

tel: 0114 2502770       by looks of things their website is under a rebuild.

I have a contact email for a Martin Levers who gave me the details of our insurance:   martin.levers@walkermidgley.co.uk

We've just renewed our club insurance through them.

For many years past my club has been insured at a good rate by Sterling.  However, this year we got a letter from Sterling's new owners that they are leaving the model club market.  As a result we are shopping around.  We originally moved away from Midgley because Sterling wanted less than half what Midgley wanted, and the annual premium was a big part of club expenses.

We are also moving away from Walker Midgely this year. Their quote come thru at over £1,000, we have been with them for over 15 years with no claims but searching around we have a quote a 1/3rd cheaper so we are changing.

Hi All
can i ask what insurance it is that most clubs need ? as ive seen posts above saying about walker midgeley   as most will know BMPRS use a policy by walker midgeley

we offer membership to all not just powerboaters but all model boaters scale sail steam fast electric etc  as our policy allows this and it is what i think is a reasonable in cost

we currently charge £15 per new member and if youve already joined us then its £12 that covers £5m public liability this is member to member and member in own right, as long as you have permission to use the water and also the boat is not capable of carrying a person and not turbine or jet powered, steam must have a valid test certificate and be suitably maintained, scale, sail, eletric, ic all included

we currently help 6 other clubs in the uk with providing there members with insurance

we do offer events for ic boats currently and now looking at fast electric but would also look at other events should people be interested in putting them on
if  we can help please message me

I've always thought it better for individuals to have their own insurance. You can join something like the BMFA, and that insures you for the vast majority of model activities, wherever you choose to operate.

King Lear Model Boat Club Leicester members are insured with BMFA via a policy covering boating requirements only,
for a modest fee of around £20 per person.
Club members also fly model aircraft using BMFA full memebership which costs more etc.  Paul

The owners of the new water we wish to use require us to have £2M Third Party Liability Insurance.

Incidentally. we have found that some domestic policies will insure your models against loss or damage (including sinking) if you have Contents Accidental Damage outside the home cover.

It’s interesting reading this everybody who are quoting seem to say about £20 per person
The Scottish federation supply member clubs with insurance
It’s roughly £20 for the club to register and then £2 per member

Why then is there a huge difference between the premiums?

Our water is a council water and they require us under the lease to hold at least 5 million public indemnity insurance?  We also have Trustees and Directors Insurance for 1 million plus contents, money, members and employers liability and personal accident cover for members and the quote for all his is £356.16 per year a saving of over £700 on what W&M quoted for?

I understand that we have had a quote for £112 from Protectivity - https://www.protectivity.com/product/model-boat-club-insurance/
I've not seen the details yet but that sounds remarkable value compared to some of the figures quoted here - if it is for similar cover O0

Hi all, just to ad mt two pennies worth. The Crawley club have used Protectivity insurance for a number of years and our local council (the lake owners) have not had a problem with them as insurers.

A few years ago we found that our Club insurance was getting more expensive each year. After much hunting around I found Stamp Insurance in Devon. They specialise in Club and Organisations insurance services.
As our home water is a Council owned model boat pond and we hold events there too in conjunction with the Council we have to have Third Party Public Liability Insurance in the sum of £5million plus we have to have 'Employers Insurance' in the same sum. We have 85 members in our Club and the cost of our insurance for this year which I have just paid is £68.80 which is the same premium as last year. We were originally paying in the region of £300 per annum from what I call the 'bigger boys' for exactly the same level of insurance. I know that other Clubs in our area of the Country also use Stamp for their insurance.
You must remember that insurance is for Public Indemnity only and does not cover the members boats or others on the pond that they may accidentally collide with - something that I keep having to remind our members of. Our insurance also covers the members for when they sail at other Club's waters.

I have just this week renewed our insurance with better cover than we have ever had and a saving of £741.00 on our previous policy quote from the old brokers whom we have used for 15 years or more and never made a claim?

Hi all

Just be careful when choosing your insurance companies  i spoken with stamp and there policy is very limited  compared with others not downing them it may be suitable for some clubs but check what your members are expecting  ie use of boat else where and such like of member to member cover member in own right etc etc
