When ships pass too closely.

I'm surprised these leviathans were allowed to pass this close considering the carnage that could have resulted. I know there will be some foreshortening due to the camera lens, but even so, they are close..

And this is what is going on in the channel in 1/24 scale, and full size.
.Texas chicken, due to water displacement the ships drive straight at each other, then use the
the water pressure to help part the two ships, and then steer back into each other to avoid bank suction along the channel.

Bloody dangerous manouvre in full scale, when you have all that water to play with.

Brian, they do the Texas Chicken in the Galveston Bay ship channel because the water depth outside the marked channel is only 10 feet.  Maybe the same in that video near Suffolk?

I was once out in my 21' outboard and sat nearby as two big tankers did the Texas Chicken.  Maybe 30-50 feet between them. And here comes an 18' boat with a large family on board.  They went between the ships while they were abeam of each other.  My hemorrhoids got pinched off watching all this. Proof that God protects fools and children.

Colin

I think you probably hit the nail on the head Colin - navigation channel (also perspective makes them look closer than they may actually have been)
