Rubbing strips on hull
« on: October 29, 2018, 04:03:32 pm »

Are the rubbing strips seen on some hulls (eg Fairey Swordsman)near the water line there to direct spray into an downward arc and therefore create lift? Also longitudinal strips under the hull..do they make the boat more stable? Yeah,I know my hull isnt a racing boat, but just thinking the strips might make it less 'squirelly'!Hull is 23" long deepish ''V'.
Thanks

It would be more correct to refer to them as "spray" strips.  I don't know about creating lift but they certainly direct the water down which stops it ending up on the deck and prevents it swamping the boat. Longitudinal strakes on the hull are designed to add lift and knock down spray.

On a fast boat you don't want water gripping the boat.  A chine rail gives an early break in the water flow, and cuts drag once that flow is broken.  If it is higher up, it is a rubbing strip to stop the hull being scraped by a quayside.

If you fit a chine rail the outer edge shopuld be sharp and not rounded to break the water flow. My Fairey Huntsman kit reviewed in the latest issue of Model Boats shows this.

They also stop the creep of water up the hull as can often be seen on hulls without them. Just a thin almost invisible film. Re a squirrely boat I would deepen the keel a bit toward the stern in a taper from bow to stern. Say 5mm
