Thunder Tiger Victoria yacht sails .....a weird one!
« on: November 02, 2018, 06:49:20 pm »

ok, I'm refurbishing a thunder tiger Victoria yacht. it had sat in a window area for 5 years u used. it was yellow on one side and bright white on the other. you've got to hate sunlight!
I have rubbed her down and painted the hull Brooklands green, with deck fitting picked out in bronze, silver and gold. ( looking for sharks teeth for the front!)
I'm looking to dye the standard sails. any ideas what to use and how???

Hmmm...  Not sure the ripstop material that the sails are made of will take dye very well. The material tends to shed water rather than being saturated by it.  Are you trying to disguise staining/discoloration or looking for a nice contrast with the hull?  If the former, a gentle wash might help. If the latter, I would try the jib first and if that looks OK then do the main. If it looks horrible then you only have to replace the jib!  What colour are you contemplating? You might get better results with a fabric paint, but I confess I have no experience of  either dye or paint on this material.

It can be dyed and I have done it, for kites. It's a very messy and long winded process with variable results. To be honest, for a set of sails, it's not worth it...but if you want me to I will dig out the instructions.

I have heard of people colouring sails with a wash made of acrylic paint and water, but the colours achieved are only light. There are lots of tutorials for making model boat sails on line, and you can get kite fabric on amazon. Personally I would choose a light color as being able to see the sails clearly helps if you sail beyond 100m from yourself.

I have a Victoria yacht and sail at Selsey, Victorias are our club yacht, we all use Mylar sails, there are a few with the original sails. They are great yachts to sail. Good Luck with your refurbishment.

the hull is Brunswick green, and I'm thinking light yellow sails. I have the dye now, just waoting do i can do it outside.
ps......never ever paint a hull Brunswick green. if it wasn't for the faded off white sails i woukd mot see the boat. the hull disappears at 20 ft away!

Check out aerosol fabric paints, they are designed mainly for soft furnishings, so are intended to take a bit of wear, last time I looked our local branch of The Range had a reasonable selection.
If not Hobby warehouses should have them.
