Not quite the same as copper rivets and roves.
But your method looks lifelike and almost true to
scale. One idea for a future build.

Super job, love it. A boat close to my heart. She had a big hand in starting my career at sea and the ethos of the books guided the upbringing of my two daughters.

Splendid woodwork Greg  :-))  [the owner will be well pleased] .....just a few questions

1. If the butt joint in the 2nd plank down is as shown, did you need to press a former against both halves to gain the set? as I cannot see any reinforcement timber plank sections on the inside surfaces of the planking [or is it below the Knee of the Seat?]
2. Was the length of planks on the originals simply dictated by the tree timber available?..
eg., was a nominal 20' set as the maximum length for all timbers & dependent on the timbers available from the Mill at the time?
3. So I think I see only the top plank and the second plank with butt joints .......so all of the planks below are without joints?
4. What brand/type of varnish did you choose?..........the internal shade & degree of crispness & brightness looks very realistic
[intentionally did not use the word gloss]
5. Will the externals have the same finish?

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Derek, the choice of material (wooden window blinds) wasn't an issue for the first few planks, but I realised that I was going to have to get creative for the upper plank runs - the blinds weren't wide enough for a single plank. During the build I added butt blocks at the joints, and got fair curves with these. A working (and painted) boat may well have had butt blocks all over the place - the builders wouldn't have minded, and it would have been a more efficient use of materials.

The butt blocks were taken off once the hull came off the molds. The curves are still fair - planks above and below any joints see to that. The current seams are tiny, and filled. I don't think they detract from the curvy woodwork too much!

Beautiful work!
Your description of yourself as a wood butcher is not truthful.

Thanks for the kind words, Rhys. I'd put up a photo of the mistakes, miss-cuts and disasters, but I don't have a lens wide enough!  ok2

As for the wrecking on the Pike Rock, I think that's the event where Swallow's sail got patched...so this boat is post-Swallowdale.  %)

Meanwhile, I'm in the shed tomorrow, for the very final push. Pushes, more like! Should be complete for the weekend and, of course, photos to follow.

Just a couple more little jobs to do ... And another three coats of varnish.  >>:-(

The white paint is a lovely gloss acrylic. Three coats. I couldn't bear the thought of masking over clinkers - I knew they'd be wicking and mess, so I took a deep breath and went for it by hand. At 1/8th a tiny squiggle looks more realistic, I think.

And finally...

Swallow's client received the boat at the start of the week. He's delighted ... I'm bereft. Got a dinghy-shaped hole in my shed.  <:(

...  Must make another!

We had a Harrison Butler Z4 tonner when I were a lad. Bought off Brigadier Sir Bernard Furgusson of Chindits and Palestine fame or infamy. Last British Governor General of New Zealand. Name of boat “Garleffan”.

The last pic is her leaving the yard brand new the day before Ww2 started. He never got to sail her as he’d just left Sandhurst and went straight to war and didn’t stop until 1948 when he left Palestine. My dad served with him Gnr. R.A. The Parachute Regiment.

Awesome! And she may still be around?!

Quote
Eddie Dorrian is the present custodian of Garleffan. Eddie has owned her for many years, slowly returning her to something like her original form. Eddie bought her in a sorry state without deck or fittings.

2015 or so?

That’s right Andy. I believe that’s from the HB owners page. I was able to fill them in on her life with us. We had her from late 50s to early 70s. She was in great nick when we sold her. I was away at sea in Blue Funnel at the time so don’t know full details. She’s last reported in Liverpool.
