3 masted square rigger- Brigg. Grp hulls
« on: November 06, 2018, 01:20:43 pm »

Hi guys, can anyone tell me where I can find a fiberglass hull to make a 3 masted square rigger
That I can build for sailing. About 36" with a mast height of about 30"
Many thanks.

Scale-sail hulls are available from Chris Brown Model Boats. A 36" long hull is under the Clinker effect tab.

I would like to leave it up for future reference. Others may also want to buy a schooner hull.

What is “M B D”?   I tried googling it, didn’t get any matches that looked like a supplier of model boat hulls....

Maybe it is shorthand??

I’m only guessing but that’s the only one I know with those initials.

There's someone making "square-rigger" hulls?  And I've been building mine all this time.

Hi guys, decided to build a brigantine instead of a 3 masted square rigger.
The grp hull from Models by Design was superb as expected.

Hi guys, could anyone tell me what angular degrees the sails should be set at on the brigantine
The hull is 37 1/2" in length, jib, square sails, mizzen etc. Or is it trial and error until you get it right.

Thanks

Are you setting sails on a static model to a certain point of sail?

If this is a sailing model (as in actually goes in the water and gets pushed around by the wind), then the angles change depending on the angle of the vessel relative to the wind.

If you're talking a free-sailing model, sit the model pointed in the direction it's going to go across the pond, and set the sails so they are all full and drawing, then place it in the pond and hope it balances.  You might make rudder adjustment to trim for the next run, and so forth.   If it doesn't balance, then there's an issue between the rig, the fin, and the rudder.

Hi Jerry, I am setting the sails on a sailing (in the water) servo controlled boat.

Then I think you'll need to go into a bit more detail about what you meant by "what angular degrees the sails should be set at on the brigantine" and what it's size has to do with that.
Do you mean the rotation of the yards, how close to center the fore-n-afts come in, the rake of the masts, there's a lot of angles on a boat.

Hi again jerry, the rake of the mast I have made adjustable till I see what she is like on the water
It is the hauled in setting to centre I was after and the max, settings for when the sails are let out.

Ok, I get it!
The mains'l - that is the big gaff-headed fore-n-aft sail on the mainmast, can only swing out as far as the main shrouds and backstays allow and your servo ought to allow that.  It doesn't need to go out to 90°, 80° will do fine.

The heads'ls depend on how you're going to control them and if they overlap.

If you look at real square riggers, you'll note the heads'l do not sheet to the center line of the boat, but out at the rail.  Drawing them in to the center will actually work against you when sailing.I control my heads'l with a semophore-arm set-up.  The jib-sheets are on free-swinging arms pushed by a sail-arm-servo.  When it's pushing one, the other is slack, like real jibs.  The spanker sheet is run to the arm itself, so the servo operates the heads'ls and the spanker.

The spanker, or in your case, the main, are not sheeted to the center-line either.  My spanker sheet anchors to a eyebolt on the waterway in the port-quarter, runs up through a block on the boom, then down through a fairlead in the waterway on the starboard quarter, below decks to the to sail-arm in the diagram above.

Hi jerry, thank you for the info and drawings, it has made things a lot clearer in how a model
sails and where to attach the control chords.
Thank you for taking the time out to answer my post it is appreciated.
