Tanker collides with Norwegian Warship
« on: November 08, 2018, 06:17:46 pm »

There has been a dramatic collision between a Maltese tanker and a Norwegian frigate. The frigate has been run aground to prevent total loss.

A good job there isn’t a war on  {-)  all that detection equipment at their disposal and not taken out by anything stealthy but rather a very very big piece of metal  :embarrassed:

On another site they were saying that the Warship had no AIS switched on. View here of the tugs pushing it ashore to stop

I suspect a Norwegian captain will have his nuts squeezed very tightly and be lucky to get another job.

Malta -1 Norway 0..     I suppose that up in darkest Norway in winter having a stealth ship painted drab grey is asking for trouble.

Yes, especially military boats.  It might just be that with the internet we hear about these things more, as there are specialist websites that enthusiasts follow, and maybe send an email to the press if they see something interesting.

This sentence taken from the report that Colin posted suggests that the warship was at anchor or docked when hit.......

The ship, a Fridtjof Nansen-class vessel, was hit by the Maltese-flagged oil tanker Sola TS around 4 a.m. local time while docked in Sture, north of Bergen, on Norway’s western coast.

Looking at some photos in the news this morning it does appear to have a rather large hole in the starboard side near the stern, extending above the deck level.

If it was already aground as reported, then methinks the tide has risen a tad O0

No - it broke loose and slid into deeper water.

She has been declared a total right off and all sensitive equipment is to be removed, plus all harmful contaminants, before any more attempts are made to remove it, so the press is now saying, before she can be removed for scrapping...…..I presume one of the more notable companies will be on their way at this moment to evaluate the situation.

what a sad end to such a beautiful looking ship.

Doesn't say much for the guy in charge of the salvage op :o
Seeing any vessel in that position is a sad sight.
Not caused by enemy action makes it even more sad.

Dont they have navy divers - a big steel plate with some thick foam strip - a number of inflatable bladders and some of that foam that expands as it comes out of the can.

even in WW2 they managed to keep vessels bigger than this afloat without sinking - well not for a while anyway.

Looked like a pretty big hole to me, nearly half the starboard side ripped away which would have opened a lot of compartments to the sea including the engineering spaces.

I'm surprised that considering the high value of this ship and the small annual budgets of their navy that they were so slow to try to save the ship.
Especially for a nation famed for their naval engineering.

We don't know the salvage circumstances or readily available facilities. The ship had been run aground and was precariously perched on some rocks with deep water on one side. They managed to get cables to her to try and stabilise her but they broke and the ship slid off. By the look of the damage there wasn't much prospect of refloating her without some form of external support and that takes time to arrange.
