Hi Netleyned, the power o/ps you mention they would be peak power? What is the mean power? I used to be a radar technician on air radar. One of the gears I was on had a peak power of 8KW, but the mean power was very low, about 10 Watts.
Other radar used as search radar was older but not 'gated' or turned off when in position in the nose of the aircraft, must have bathed the pilot in radiation while he was flying, This same radar when being serviced could be pointed up at our neon lighting in a room maybe 100 feet long and light every fluorescent light in the room that was in its path.
After one of our coleagues started feeling unwell for no reason some shielding, earthed chicken wire, was used like a Faraday cage. Never found out if he had a radiation problem though.
The ground radar had a large out of bounds area when it was in use.
All a long while ago now but I still lke keeping up with technology.
