apparently the old bedstead radars fitted on the T42s originally had the ability if turned all the way to maximum power
to fry the electronics on aircraft.

965 pushed out 450KW of radiated power.
984 Dustbin on Eagle and Victorious pushed out 3 x 3MW
20 times as much
power does not discriminate between Friend and Foe
Old wives tale???

The reason the Ruskies came no closer was probably the smell of burning electrical insulation.

I watched sunday and mondays programs and found them interesting, especially the ability to track the 17 ruski aircraft, Loved the quote of they've got 17 aircraft we've got 48 missiles- I wonder how that would pan out in real life!
Also love the sailor with the sikh headwear with 'royal navy' on it  :}

It would pan out very badly as it would need many hundreds not 48. They have so many aircraft I don't know why we bother at all

48 in the tubes, how many in the stores if any, 17 aircraft and another for the missile the aircraft had launched and they would be out if more than one missile release by the aircraft, makes you wonder.

Plus a salvo of missiles from the warship that had disappeared and the Wildcat was sent off to find.

I also think that aircraft which are ‘fly by wire’ can suffer from interference of Their flying controls if hit with high power HF radio signals, despite the wiring being screened.

Wildcat ? ? ?, thought it was a Lynx, lol, it had already returned hadn't it, if it was Dennis's ranger etc (cv) then I would have expected wildcats (yes i do know there is a variant of the Lynx called a wildcat - well i do now) {-)

Hi Netleyned, the power o/ps you mention they would be peak power? What is the mean power?  I used to be a radar technician on air radar.  One of the gears I was on had a peak power of 8KW, but the mean power was very low, about 10 Watts.

Other radar used as search radar was older but not 'gated' or turned off when in position in the nose of the aircraft, must have bathed the pilot in radiation while he was flying,  This same radar when being serviced could be pointed up at our neon lighting in a room maybe 100 feet long and light every fluorescent light in the room that was in its path.
After one of our coleagues started feeling unwell for no reason some shielding, earthed chicken wire, was used like a Faraday cage.  Never found out if he had a radiation problem though.

The ground radar had a large out of bounds area when it was in use.
All a long while ago now but I still lke keeping up with technology.
Regards Roy

Are the Russians using stealth technology in the form of a cloaking device (like the Klingons in Star Trek)? One minute they are tracking a Russki warship then it dissapears completely, so they launch the helicopter to look for it. All they find is an intel collecting trawler, but then a little later the images change from the trawler back to a warship. Hmmm, serious stealth technology on show there  :} :}

Warship radars also affect camera shutters. It happened to me twice, once when I was covering Staff Collage Sea Days and I was aboard HMS Newcastle the other
when a Dutch/Belgian Kortenor class frigate was coming alongside HMS Belfast in the Pool of London. The shutter (electro – magnetic) on my Mamiya 645 just sized up on both occasions.

When I had a 1:1 scale boat leisure sailors were warned that GPS in Portsmouth Harbour could be unreliable due to the signals being affected by warship radars.

Back in the 60's the old 965 radar
used to give a buzz on BBC radio,
One for every rotation %)
Even the ships SRE picked it up.
The radar was in the VHF band.
@ Roycv, I don't have the ERP or MP
figures and the radars were low freq
(for radar)
Had a nice job cleaning and repairing a
bird strike on a Hunter T8 ranging radar
On 764 Sqd RNAS.

Hi netleyned, thanks for the response.  All back in the day etc.  I was on 59 Squadron RAF(1957-60) it was only up and running for about 3 years and then amalgamated with 3 Sqdrn.  Having started up as 102 Sqdrn.  It was formed to fly Canberras.
Personally we were cycled between 59 and the Radio Servicing Flight to keep our hands in on repair, although I did not see the navigation radar I was primarily trained on until moving to Lyneham to work on Vanguard transport aircraft.
Forgot to mention the radar was in the X-band at 8800Mhtz.

The older Soviet era aircraft all still have valve based radars which are far more hardened against EMP/high powered radar , but , they had to move to modern electronics for the new radars needed to stand a chance against stealthy aircraft and those would be vulnerable to high powered radar.... I also think the RN would've turned the radar power down just to keep its ultimate range a secret from the Russians
