Has any one used with success the hollow hole punch tools, the type used for cutting holes in leather.I want to cut out very small abs plastic discs, i can see pros and cons, but, thinking it might be quicker and easier for my build, ebay sell them at reasonable prices...

I have two hollow punch sets. One is Metric up to 10mm, the other Imperial up to 0.5 inch. They come in very handy for producing small discs out of plastic and thin ply which would be difficult to make otherwise. I also have a revolving leather punch which goes up to 4.5mm. If you get one of those then make sure it is the heavy duty type as the cheap ones don't hold their edge for long.

Yes, the good old stationary 2 hole punch    If that is too big take a short length of brass pipe, sharpen the edges at one end, tap with a mallet, then push out the disc with a piece of rod.

Yes , I bought a set many years ago and found them only very slightly ok for what I wanted cutting port holes from a ships plasticard build...........I found the compass cutter far far more reliable and effective TBH.

leather working punches might work, I have just bought a heavy duty punch for thin metal (up to about 1mm m steel) this can also do plastics wood and leather.

Why complicate things?

Just buy them, they are cheap enough and perfectly adequate for plasticard etc.

Hole punch set advertised for all sorts of materials...including metal.....


This is not false advertising 


1 mm thick lead sheet is metal...so is 0.25mm thick annealed copper sheet  .....so these amazing WAD punches could certainly cope with those metals

I have just bought asset for a project, and find they cut thin styrene very well with a sharp tap from a hammer.
I also used the very small punch to make holes in masking tape, then cut a line from the hole to the edge. Result is a very simple and effective way to mask around deck railing stanchions.

A few important points not to be overlooked......


1. These WAD type [circular hollow punches] are best used hammering against the end grain of a supported piece of timber 
2. Close grained hard wood or semi hard wood is preferable
3. Soft woods will result in the material being punched, tearing & elongating down into the softwood


If you needed 1 x steam gasket, make 6 x at the same time...cut one from plastic sheet...then use that as a jig plate for the punching of the bolt holes in the blanks & yes on the correct PCD & equally spaced...............


Saves a lot of time in the long run

received my punch set, they appear quite sturdy, so should last some time, any way cut the 5mm dia discs as needed , a little tidy up around the edges but thumbs up...
