help and info wanted.......magnifying head lamp
« on: November 26, 2018, 06:39:38 am »

ok, last saturday, I had a free day to myself, wife went to winter wonderland in London with her friends.
I decided to do some figure painting (warhammer Archers x 30) not done ant figures for about 3 years. I wear readig glasses at 2.5 mag. while painting, i noticed that i could not see the model detail well. figures undercoated black, which did not help.
so ive decided that i need a lamp and magnification head unit. i tried painting under a normal mag unit, but not light and mag was 20x again 2 strong.
so the question is, i need a head unit to wear with led lights plus if possible, multiple magnification. say 2x, 4x, 10x  and upto 20x?
also without breaking the bank
any advice???
ps i can seet see my cuppa and a bbq so wicksteed is safe at the moment. although I take no resonsibility for drinking your alcohol!!

If you need more magnification you can get LED safety glasses, and use a regular mag on a stand.
There are also magnification angle poise lamps of varying magnification and brightness.

The type of thing tiger shows is ideal. Personally, I bought something similar from China, via Amazon for £1.99 and they are superb, complete with adjustable light. I could not be without them now. I only wish I had ordered 10 pairs....

Hi, I use a clamp around the head set.  It comes with 6 lenses which can be used one or two together, there is an adjustable LED light on top.  Cost £8.90 a couple of years ago out of China.
Works for me although I could not wear it the whole time as perhaps would be with 'glasses' type ones.

I have one of the headband visor style ones that lenses clip on to. It's uncomfortable to wear hard to keep focus the lenses are either to close or too far away from your eyes, in short it lives in a drawer and very rarely comes out

EDIT..... Same as Roy's by the  sounds of it

Hi I have put additional cushioning in mine and half an hour is OK but I aware of the weight.  Anyway I use it regularly, it is effective but not perfect.

When doing something small and fiddly that needs to be close, I use a clip-on loupe with my glasses and whatever light I am working in.  Oddly, although only one eye gets the magnification, I still have depth perception.  With a loupe, you get the choice of one or the other lens, or both, or neither without looking away from the workpiece.
Like Brian60, I never got along with headband devices.  My eyesight - I do have a rather different prescription for each eye - anything that doesn't let me keep my specs on just doesn't work comfortably for me.

I just slip my prescription reading glasses on as well as my my prescription distance glasses, focus is then about 2" from my nose, but in excellent detail.

Just bought the one recommended by TT. Very impressed with it on initially trying it out. Seens good quality and design and worth £9.39 of anybody's money even if you only use it occasionally.

Turn the lights on and you could probably audition for a role in Dr Who.
