Valentine class detstroyer
« on: December 04, 2018, 01:08:57 pm »

I am building a  Valentine class destroyer (HMS Venus) and so far have not been able to source detailed drawings/plans for this. Have downloaded a number of photos but they do not show much detail. Any suggestions?

She would have been likely been a member of the U or V class destroyers built between 1941 and 1943.
Try searching for U or V class instead of Valentine class as the Royal Navy tends to use those designations instead of names- The old John Lambert collection may have had U/V class drawing or failing that Deans Marine may  do a kit of a U or V class as a basis.

Dean's do a V class destroyer - they will sell plans separately if you call them.

As far as I can tell I here was only a HMS Venus in the Second World War and she was at D-day.

Remember walking across her to Verulam outboard when involved in A/S trials.

I have access at our club to a model of Verulam. Could take some photos if helpful.

Is that not perhaps the later Verulam of the U & V classes of WW11 as opposed to the WW1 built V and W class which Valentine was from before being sunk in 1940?

As I said in my earlier post there was only one destroyer called Venus and she was built in WW2 thus making her a U/V class destroyer of 1943. Judging by some of the images in google searches that particular class were subject to post war modifications to fast frigate designs.

Like Nick and others I assume you are talking about the WW2 War Emergency V class leader.  If so, when are you modelling her?  The configuration changed at various stages, such as when the initial fit tripod mast was changed to a lattice one and also there were changes to the close range weapons fit and the camouflage.  Historically her finest hour was when she took part in August 1945 I the sinking of the Japanese cruiser Haguro but she had a fairly busy war with Russian convoys and D-Day as well.  You might want to get a copy of Shipcraft 21 by Les Brown on the later war destroyers which explains quite well all the differences between the many very similar War Emergency types.

Remember the three Venus, Virago and Verulam being reclassed as Frigates and Verulam was the one I had to work with on Sonar Systems Trials.

As some members were saying, which one are you wanting to model. First Valentine , launched Mar 1917 by camel laird lost May 1940 and was a wair conversion and had two funnels then there was the WW2 built Oct 1942 by john browns single funnel, but transferred to the RCN soon after build and out off the RN.

Thanks for all the replies.  It is the WW2 one with the lattice mast but before conversion to a type 15 frigate. :-))
