Tsekoa II
« on: December 12, 2018, 11:45:18 am »

I am expecting the kit from Slipway models for the ex-Canadian Coast Guard Buoy Layer, Tsekoa II next week.  I see on their web page photo gallery that the props are shown to be inboard rotating.  Any comments on this from you?

Thanks for that. As you're Somerset based any chance you can come to our sailing lake on Warminster one Sunday morning. (see Warminster model boat club web site)

I would hazard a guess that model slipway did the research and advised correctly for their model
Maybe digest this to form our own conclusion  :-))

Fair point. I have done some further enquires and have come to the conclusion that inboard rotation is correct .
Had email from SWM and kit is being dispatched tomoz. (17th)

I'm not convinced myself that it makes a significant difference on a scale sailing model but easy to change polarity and swap props over at some point if not satisfied. More significant is not to have same rotation.
My tug has outboard rotating 68mm props (Protean/propshop cast bronze) and I just followed established protocol for this  {-)  So much power and wonderful wake  :-)

''More significant is not to have same rotation''
[/size]That's debatable the Graupner Wiesel runs 3 in  the same direction and the majority of WW2 Mtbs and rescue boats  also did

Most of my multi prop models have outward turning props never been a problem. All my models have props fitted from Protean/Prop Shop hope this helps.

Three props isn’t comparing apples with apples though  :-)
My understanding is that the outer props counter rotate outwards  and centre either way. Fast forward with all props
Slow with centre prop and manoevering astern with outer props ? But still just as well to experiment.
If Graupner didn’t provide independent control of the props then it would be pointless to have the above set up and perhaps not important for a model ?

Propwalk - Twin Screw Most twin screw boats use contra rotating propellers. Each propeller is placed either side of the centre-line and is outward turning therefore rotating in contrary directions. When both engines are used simultaneously they cancel out propwalk and the boat drives straight.

Sorry to say the Graupner Wiesel is totally wrong in relation to number of props. The full size vessel had four shafts not three that were fitted to the model. My PT 596 has three shafts all props spin outwards with no problems at all.

Back to the question of the Tsekoa 2, outward turning props produce a bit more stern lift, inward turning sink the stern a little. there is no hard rule it really depends on the hullform and usage.

Consensus across the WWW is that slower moving vessels like tugs benefit from outward turning whilst faster vessels commonly use inward turning

Hi Manofkent

To try and put this question to bed I emailed the Gentleman in Canada that helped me out with the photo's that I sent you, just ten min ago he sent me the following "Hopefully the photo of the props will help. They are stacked face out. so that is what they look like mounted facing aft."

I hope that this is of some help.
