Andy’s, nothing like a Stevn's arctic build!
« on: December 12, 2018, 10:43:32 pm »

This build is only possible for me due to the meticulous hard work of member Chipchase  :-))  having created the plug of the hull. Expertly produced thereon by Anth at Orion.

LINK to Chipchase build from the beginning. Expect a long ride  :-)

My build plans will arrive this week and I've delayed receipt of the hull until next week. Expect the usual volume of photographs as I go and another long ride

See my signature for link to my other nearly complete build as pictured

Cheers club mate  :-))
I may finally stop working but just now it’s a welcome boost to hobby fund  :-)
I don’t really have the space or the skill of Brian so I’m relying heavily on Hong Kong for drives
Failing that I may have to bite the bullet and buy the ones at silly money  %%

For your money you get absolute quality plans too on very good paper 1:1 of the actual model. Very happy  :-))
My hull should arrive in the next few days as requested  :-)

Good Dave, I hope to deliver  :-))
I'm thinking she has a lot going on up top so already thinking I need to keep that light. Brian likely has a good idea of weight in the water but I'm guessing in excess of 50lb.
Loads of room in the hull and I'm toying with using KMB jet drives to power bow thrusters, mounted over the water intakes on the hull sides. I'll be following Brian very closely and hope to contribute in part to the build

Personally I would be building topside either out of the thinnest ply available....0.8mm or the equivellent in Plastic card, just to keep the topside weight down

I must admit I prefer thin ply as per Portgarth but at this point keeping my options open  :-)

Due to my lack of space time and skill that Brian has in abundance I cannot make my own Z drives.
So I am relying on these guys in HK to come up with the goods at a more modest price than €560 each  <:(

Morning Andy
What about just using shafts & steerable nozzles with a nice pair of prop shop propeller.  save you few £££
But your build mate i look forward to your work  :-))

Hi Jason. I looked at that option again last night but I feel I'd be doing nothing new to further my experience but more importantly I don't think it would do justice to Brian's efforts being so accurate.
As for the Potgarth at the time I bought it I did not realise I could have used Graupner Schottels or that they existed as MMM push the prop shaft option right from the off with their steerable korts.
Stevns is completely scratch with no templates to mislead so I will use all I have learned to produce a good likeness.

Jason

The hull is designed for steerable nozzles, if anyone  manages to fit fixed shafts and nozzles the shaft would have to be at quite an angle

The plug was built to look something like the Stevns Arctic or Ocean, as you know when I managed to get drawings of the vessel I could not get hull line drawings so the plug was built to my spec and not identical to the hull of the full-sized vessel. The drawings that I passed onto Anth when he decided to market the hull are GA drawings.  So, a bit of creative modelling will have to be done on the hull for it to look something like the Stevns Arctic or Stevns Ocean.

Sure it will be fine Brian but still not arrived and don't know when to expect it. Wife is not happy staying in for it.

Anyone got experience with this bow thruster? looks better than the raboesch offerings

Thank you but no  :-))
That is made by the same Facebook company though that I am waiting for to produce 80mm in brass.
Pretty sure those are 63mm and largely plastic like the Graupner.

p.s. first post I see so welcome to Mayhem  O0

This takes me back to the first day of Portgarth build  :-)

First job will be the construction of a build stand that will double as transport for the finished item

Like so.  Maltby on top shelf

Cheers yes I have three now Maltby Esvagt Stevns  :-)  enough for a good few years  %%

Bow thruster looks to be quite a challenge so I'm going to decide on either the 32 or 40mm after closer examination

I have marked the hull in the photo Andy just to give you a rough idea were I think would be the best location, just my thoughts.

Because it is such a large hull its very easy for the GRP to twist as mine is currently. Twisting it the opposite way corrects this but important to note whilst building that this must be constantly monitored while fitting decks etc. which will then keep bow and stern level with each other.
The stand will be made to ensure the hull stays level across the beam with sand or lead bags to help keep it correct

Completely agree Brian thanks but I think I'll have to limit it to the 32mm
I'll use some pipe initially and see if It can go to 40 before ordering
