Thanks Rich

I wondered where your picture was but I now see you are referring to the picture Brian posted.

The stick rod or pole on the end is from a micro switch which I surmise ensures that the winch will stop if the RIB is hoisted too far due to lack of operator concentration %%

I think the RIB will perform all the tasks mentioned

Yes.  Often there is a weight on the hook colloquially called a "headache ball" for a couple of reasons.  Terribly un-kooth for a crane op to allow a crane hook to touch the deck (and the wires unload on the sheaves back to the winch) or to hoist it up to the top into the sheave at the end of the boom (and do damage) -so operator training for the former and for the latter -the common "anti-two block" preventing the block on the hook and the block on the crane boom from touching if they're distracted by the newspaper, or facebook these days.  None of that applies to HIAB's or what's horrifically referred to as "cherry pickers" which means at least 3 different things in 3 different applications.

The winch is now painted and whilst it dries I thought I would continue down this tributary.

So the main fore winches are quite BIG requiring 65mm drum sides.

This is the same green I bought for the hull but by mistake satin finish. I think it works very well and the styrene certainly doesn't look like plastic anymore.
I haven't fully loaded the drum but if I had it would hold appx 3.5 times the hull length or lets say at least 100metres on the full size boat.

A good burst on the banjo today saw a repeat of the same procedure to create the stern winch drums. That is the last of the large diameter machining and everything else will be within 25mm diameter.

Thanks Mark, I think the secret is in the can  :-)  This paint supplier uses a fine fan spray nozzle  :-))

This is a sample of why it's good to have mates  8)

Coolest of cool dummy motors extra big for big winches  :}

It was like wading through treacle this afternoon until I had a lightbulb moment. The idea struck me to glue washers to styrene then trim around them to create bearing end caps.

Hello Andy,
 your build is looking so good as Stumps says so inspiring, As for making plastic discs I find my hole punch tubes great.

Thank you all, all appreciated. No updates today as the parts are all in paint.

A lot of alterations along the way but now pretty much complete with the exception of paint (I've run out  :(( ) and the large dummy motor.

Finally my 1/64 brass strip arrived so I've continued with the roof ladders where I left off. More pictures in the gallery.

The only primer I use on brass.

I'll need a warm day to top all the brass off with appliance white

I may start the bow winch later today

Many of the parts are in a drawer. Looks pretty far on if I put everything on. I'm not looking forwards to windows  {-)

Thanks  :-)

Hello Andy Merry Christmas,
 That winch is amazing more so that it's scratch build by the way I think your green is spot on.
                         Regards Howard.

Same to you Howard thank you.

I just had an epiphany. I've realised that my island bench is simply too tall for this build to be comfortable  %%
So it is (four cuts later) 105mm lower  :}

When I started this build I had absolutely no idea how much detail I would employ or how well it would go together from a pile of flat sheet styrene especially as a newbie to this medium.
As I've progressed my nothing like a Stevn's has gotten more and more like exactly what I wanted to avoid  {-)  and closer to reality than expected.

So I now need to modify the timbered deck to accommodate another winch that previously I thought I'd give a miss.

Paxolin surgery is not a problem unless you cut out too much just like with wood.

From my newly modified working height lowered IKEA bench. It never felt a thing honest.

Engine room escape hatch fitted with screws and template of winch footprint.
