Being a car nut (as well as a railway, boat and aeroplane nut....) I always buy the Christmas issue of Autocar Magazine because of their sometimes outlandish road tests in that issue. In recent years they've tested the Flying Scotsman locomotive, a Challenger tank and an RAF Tornado fighter etc. etc.
This year's test will be of special interest here as they've done an RNLI Shannon Class lifeboat.
Highlight figures include 1282 bhp from the engines, a 0-37 mph acceleration time of 35.5 secs, a 37-0 mph braking time of 9.5 secs and a 2740 litre fuel tank!
The dual control consoles, one upper and one lower, would look more in place in an Airbus A380 airliner, the Shannon even having a single lever steering control at the lower level!
