Hello Bob

I am very interested to see the pictures of CVA 01. Had things turned out differently that could have well been my home during the late 1970's to 1980 something. I can recall, (just about!) the day in 1971 or72 I believe when all the Buccaneer Aircrew at Lossiemouth were summoned together to be told that all the Carriers would be scrapped by the end of '72 or '73. We all made our plans on using our redundancy money and I was all set to go to a technical college in Oxford to study Cartography. A while later it was announced that Ark Royal was to be extended until the end of 1978 so I was required to stay on. My apologies if the dates above are slightly incorrect but it gives the picture.

Keep the pictures of the build coming as I am very interested to see what CVA01 would have been.

John
Thanks for that, my plans for her are, ballast trials (hopefully) Saturday, then it is to work on the parts I wish to modify, will be diving into the island late Jane once the NMM drawings are scanned and in my position,  as things go I will start a build log. Were you WAFU or another branch? I ask as trying to get accurate info on what lights on the flight deck, the model has leds in the deck but unfortunately they run right into the catapult area so will need modifying..

Thanks for your interest and here is a shot of her in refit at the Gloucester dockyard (my garage)

Hello Bob
Yes I was a WAFU, whichever meaning you wish to choose! I was a Buccaneer Observer and served on HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal from 1969-1978.
I wouldn't like to trust my memory too much for details of the flight deck lighting but you must remember that when launching or recovering aircraft virtually the whole of the flight deck would be in use for one function or another and lit appropriately. So when night flying different lights would be in use for either function and with space short areas in use would effectively overlap. Any questions please ask and I will do my best but I suspect that Google will come up with as much as I can.

Don't forget the 'Donkeys Plonk'. this was a vertical pole with red lights on that ran vertically down at the stern of the ship below the landing centre line. If you were lined up correctly it formed a straight line with the centre line lights but if you were offset to one side and approaching at an angle it formed an angle with the centre line lights.

Good luck with the build.

Buccs you lucky man, just finished the Buccaner boys, great read.

Yes will pick you brains once all the plans are in place, it will not be 100% all deck light but the major ones, that will be visible for the public to see.
Really hoping she gets wet this Saturday, will post if she does.

Well I will keep this going as the rebuild log of QE.
Today she was launched for ballast trials and passed with flying colours, only needing two 5kg batteries and about 4kg of lead in the bow, only issue was after a while she began to take on water, rather quickly, source was one of the A frames which have been bolted in with a washer then body filler, had deteriorated, very much like a lot of the glue, has become brittle, nothing to worry about as she now will go through the fitting out process, three shots of her afloat and one showing the removal of prop shafts and rudder, to relocate them in correct position and correct angle.

Just a single update, all the rudders and prop shafts removed, next phase will be a fresh coat of fibre glass to seal the gaps, then new shafts and rudders fitted at correct distance and angles.  it looks like a butcher job, but not as bad as it seems.

Its great to see a CVA out on the pond.  Your project is coming along nicely and I will be watching for further posts.  I served aboard  the USS Ranger CVA-61 in 1969.  Sad that the old lady is now scrap.  They tried to save her, but funding just was not there.  Many of the old Forrestal Class carriers are gone now.  I'm working on the USS Intrepid CV-11.  An Essex class carrier in the beginning, but modified with the first angle deck and steam catapults for the US Navy.  I'm really enjoying this build, great design and will be most interesting when completed.  All my ship models are entombed in glass cases.. perhaps one day I will try RC and sail one.  Cheers, Dennis

Today, fibre glassed the area that had all the running gear removed, then added filler, ready to rub down, next will be marking the holes for the new locations of rudders and A frames.
