"brush of paint and tarred it on" ......yes, I suspect the original Victory had black tar on her underwater hull planking


Saying this, in the years between the laying of her keel in 1759 to her hull launching 1765, one would think your builder would have had more than sufficient time [6 years] to paint the other side of the vessel 


PS.....I have included a link address should you need to make a quantity of original type Black Tar for the opposite side of your vessel

I do notice one of the Project Team authors is a Chap by the name of Marie Curie [well obviously a Foreigner as he is named as Marie Curie fellow]

I was ranting on the 1.100 model I have I thought on first looks was a decent one all varnish Finnish.
Taking a close look one side not painted other is but it is not a very good job ie: looks like its been put on with tar brush,
So not sure what to do ?

Two options, leave the one side as is and display with that side away from the viewer or, some judicious and gentle sanding to remove as much of the poorly applied varnish \ paint. Then, re paint \ varnish both sides.

Yes John V...this is correct, the copper plates were nailed onto the hull planks with long copper/bronze nails......


Each of the shingle like uniform size copper plates was fitted over a semi liquid warm swabbing of Black Tar Pitch

It was in fact, the carcinogens from the Black Tar Pitch that inhibitedworm growth in the hull timbers and hence saved the hull

The value of copper plates?.........on other vessels the plates were stripped & sold to Island Natives to make copper cooking pots

Removing paint easy If used with paint stripper (CAREFULLY) Sails  Now your are in for more fun  I'd leave them furled on the yards.

Every so often (about once a month at this rate) there is a series on greatest ships - Victory - Belfast and the latest was the Cutty Sark, in this one they mentioned the copper plates, and whilst he was under the ship they seemed to be very smoothly applied to provide two things as he explained, a deterrent for the dreaded barnacle and for speed, I suppose the tar would kill anything else attacking the timber.

If you need a lot of guns and you will be painting them black you can make a mold from epoxy putty. Mix it up put in a box, grease the original (thinly) and push it to half its depth into the epoxy putty. Make some deliberate indentaions round the edge and leave to set. Make sure the cut line is sharp. Once set remove the original, re grease and put it back, then grease the surface of the epoxy putty and put more on top pressing securly down around the gun. Once all set you should be able to easily part the mold. wash off any grease. Cut casting channels and cast your guns. I did this with a 74 gun ship of the line many years ago and it worked very well indeed. I actually used lead but probably better to use white metal these days. I produced 74 guns in about 15 mins this way. There is a bit of a knack to it but its really quite easy and very cost effective.


There is also a trick that if you extend the barrel with a thin brass rod equal to the bore and in each gun use a short length of brass tube you can also cast the bore at the same time.


This is a very inexpensive way to make multiple guns and very cheap. If you get a dodgy one just chuck it back in the pan and have another go!

There is a very old book on HMS victory with very detailed plans including rigging - I can't recall what its called (Its not the anatomy of the ship which is also excellent and may be easier to find) but it should not be too hard to find. Have a look on www.abebooks.co.uk   This is a independent web site with hundreds of second hand books being sold by independent sellers. Last time I looked I think they has 7 million books!

I am doing an Airfix version, a great deal smaller and to the kits instructions, so the rigging will be as close to the instructions as possible - but with the change that if it gets in the way of the sails operating - and no guarantee it will work anyway, some rigging will be removed, still have to finish the rudder and the test tank check.


Oh, and I agree it depends on what you want, cast the guns as others suggest, there are instructions on the HOW TO section of the forum, and kits available listed with specialist companies again in those threads, striping the paint off should be done as advised very carefully and suggestions are again in the How To sections, as for rigging if you have instructions try matching them to the masts, get a book as suggested, if you are not so inclined to go down the 'must be perfect' route you could download the Airfix instruction PDF from the web to give an resemblance of rigging - your choice, the kit numbers are A50049 kit 1:180 HMS VICTORY compared to the 09252G HMS VICTORY

I thought that the old book was the one by E Nepean Longridge which was "The Anatomy of Nelsons Ships" £15.00 up from Abe or £10.00 up fromAmazon?

That was the build of the Science Museum model?

Find an obscure French 100-gun ship and change the name. Then nobody can call you out on scale accuracy! The outstanding work of reference is "The Anatomy of Nelson's ships" by C Nepean Longridge.ISBN 0-85344-091-3 I borrowed  a copy through the local library.

Victory herself is only partially rigged at the moment whilst undergoing restoration.Colin

This could be a unique model if done in it`s current part-rigged 2019 fit. Some simple workmen's tools and a few cannon and barrels,plank, ropes etc on the dockside for a Victory diorama instead of just a ship model. see www.hmsvictory.de for latest colours. Good luck
