The group members collectively are currently working to revitalise and build new pontoons as required in preparation for the new season.
Myself I am construction a row of four sections 300x1200 and finding it quite interesting developing platforms where the timber frame will be held clear from contact with the water. The gap between deck and waterline will be concealed with a roll of 100mm DPM and the timber will be 2 coats of 2PAK garage floor paint. Floatation provided by 8x2litre milk cartons per pontoon.

A curious selection of materials  :o ......did the criteria specify that the Pontoons must be subjected to 40 days & 40 nights of rain?  :-X .... Derek

Sorry Derek but I'm not sure what you are implying?
I'm looking at longevity and resistance to the elements. Surely better to spend a bit more and get a decade out of them. I'm not expecting them to be put away but left on the water week in week out.
Balne moor MBC is a private facility not open to public

Andy.....I commend your Clubs members in taking ownership of the facilities & projects such as Pontoons etc...

The reference to 40 days & 40 nights [of rain] was from the stories of the first recorded boat builder, however I don't believe he selected any Chip Board for the build

I have little faith in any forms of man made timbers listed as Moisture Resistant [to BS xyz123] .....even when subjected even to a dense wet fog  {-)

Thank you  Derek
It is not chip board but OSB and 2 coats of resin will be good to go

Oriented Strand Board is a widely used, versatile structural wood panel. Manufactured from waterproof heat-cured adhesives and rectangularly shaped wood strands that are arranged in cross-oriented layers, OSB is an engineered wood panel that shares many of the strength and performance characteristics
of plywood.”

As Andy says, all the harbours and obstacles at Balne Moor stay in the pond from March to October.

We need to protect against water damage, but that is only part of the story!

Last year one of our members restored the oil derrick and it was replaced in its home on the water.  A few weeks later our resident gardener was sitting in his caravan awning and witnessed a mini typhoon cross the pond and single out the derrick, ripping off the crane and generally dishevelling the construction. The hazards of modelling :} !

Fitted with 8x2 litre milk cartons the pontoon floats with wood well clear of the water. The addition of the 100mm DPM skirt will finish it off nicely.
These will add to those provided by other members and refurbished older ones. Work has been ongoing for some time with members getting stuck in in readiness for the new season.

With skirt added

Well done Andy, great work as always.

I'm looking forward to seeing the product of all the work undertaken by members this year. Overall the pond will be in much better shape. Excellent effort everyone!!

I didn’t get four done but I launched it skirtless to demonstrate that the heavily coated timber is never in constant contact with water so no reason to rot for many years I hope

A very productive weekend despite a very wet Saturday and extremely cold today.
